I bought this bread machine for my birthday. I have been wanting one forever! I bought this one because it was the best value (considering included options and the overall cost). So far I have made the basic white bread (lovely), and the italian parmasean bread (yummy) with fantastic results and rave reviews from my family. The light wheat bread recipe from the book needed tweaked. I made it 3 times exactly as the recipe called thinking I did something wrong and each time the bread barely rose and was the texture of a brick. I search online and found some trouble shooting tips and made adjustments and the result was "the best wheat bread I have ever had" from my husband who is rather picky about breads... Here is the new recipe: 1.25 cup milk 2 tablespoon water 1.5 teaspoon salt (I used kosher) 3 tablespoon sugar 3 tablespoon vegetable oil 2.5 cups high gluten (bread) flour 1.5 cups 100% whole wheat flour 3 teaspoons of bread machine yeast Prepare on cycle 1 Use 2 pound loaf setting and light crust If I end up tweaking more recipes from the book I will be sure to come back and post a comment! This was the BEST gift I have ever gotten for myself! My favorite part is being able to feed my family wonderfully delicious breads without all the preservatives from store bought breads! I tagged some great ingredients to this review of the products I used when making this recipe!

My first breadmaker and I am so impressed with the features and ease of use. I can't imagine a more expensive one could make better tasting bread. It's the reviews on here that sealed the deal for me to purchase this and the reviews were spot on. Here's pics of my White Wheat Recipe from the owners manual. Yummy and easy to slice

This is my first bread machine. It's very easy to use. The results come out good. It takes practice to get the best results. I learned from more experienced users: sometimes, the type of flours you use and the temperature of liquid you add make the same receipts come out slightly different, so you have to try and do a little adjustment on your own. I made three loafs and used dough function twice, very satisfied!

I tried 3 times to make a 1.5 size loaf from the recipes included in the instruction booklet. White Wheat Bread 2 times - bread came out grainy and heavy with a too hard crust. White Bread 1 time - came out with a hard crust. I also tried to make a yellow cake with mix which came out with a too dark bottom and side crust. My sister tasted it and said it was like a heavy pound cake so she took half of it and said she would just cut the bottom and side crust off. Have given this machine a more than fair trial. I used a Welbilt Bread Machine for years and never had a problem. I give up and am returning this bread machine. Sorry the breads were thrown out before I thought about taking pictures.

Hamilton Beach 29881 HomeBaker Bread Maker first use experience: The factory supplied box was hard to lift out of the outer brown shipping box it came in because of the very tight fit. Once the Bread Machine box was opened the machine was very well insulated in the middle with four styrofoam spacers on the top and bottom. I chose to skip the Bake-only process with no ingredients that some other machines suggest to break in the non stick black surfaces. I simply cleaned the Bread Pan inside and the two mixing Paddles with dish soap and warm water as they recommend before my first use. FYI: Their inside Bread Pan dimensions Measure 6.8 in Long x 5.25 in Wide x 6.5 in High or Deep. Big plus is that there is an ample size viewing window. Their White wheat 1.5 Pound recipe from their manual was simple enough since I already had all the ingredients from using a previous Bread machine. I read reviews about their recipe not using enough water so I supervised the 1st kneading cycle AND had to Add 1/8 Cup of extra water to make the dough ball form properly which was the size of a grapefruit. My theory was that the recipe was tested with Canadian Bread Flour because the recipe called for a lesser amount compared to the more standard American Bread Flour. Thus, less flour coincides with using less water! I noticed after all the ingredients were mixed properly, the dough ball was mostly being tossed into one of the 4 corners of the bread pan as the paddle pulsed and then rested while the kneading phase progressed. Sometimes at high speeds the dough ball balanced exactly on top of the slanted mixing paddle as if there was a trained seal balancing a beach ball. The final resting dough ball was left positioned on the right side of the pan with about an inch clearance on the left side. I just left it there to rise not wanting to lose any temperature gain by opening the top lid to roll the ball completely over the single mixing paddle. The loaf was a little shorter on the left top side but the finished loaf filled in to touch both sides before the Bake started. Normally, whole wheat rises less than white flour bread so I was surprised that the highest point was 5 inches for this 1.5 Pound recipe! Once the baking was done I left the loaf in during the Keep Warm period. My wife made me stop half way through so she could have some bread before bed-time. The lights were dim in the Kitchen and the bread pan was still very warm when I removed the pan and placed it on a toaster-oven rack to cool down a little. I just closed the lid and noticed there was a glowing orange heating element at the bottom of the cooking chamber. I thought "keep warm" meant warm to the touch but the loaf sides were still obviously cooking down there. I would have missed the glowing IF I stopped the machine as they suggest in the manual. The top loaf color was a little lighter than all the sides! I did set this for a Medium crust but noticed after slicing the bread that the crust was about 1/8 inch all the way around and was as hard and crunchy as a dry Crouton cube. Maybe some folks would like this? I'm glad we stopped the "keep warm" phase in the middle. Maybe the moral is, the darker bread should use the Light crust setting and you could make it darker to your own taste after you know what the light setting looks like for a certain recipe? At first the loaf was stuck as I tried to shake out the bread. I poured a little liquid around the loaf in the middle to soften the bottom up, twisted the spindle shaft slightly from the bottem of the pan and then shook the it upside down again. Luckily, the mixing Paddle stayed in the pan when the bread came out. There was a mixing Paddle signature imprint left in the bottom of the bread of 1 1/8 for the circular spindle part and 1 3/4 high for the slanted sail portion of the blade. Unfortunately it left a larger rip than I expected in the bottom of the loaf. The paddle hovers about 1/8 inch off the bottom of the bread pan so there's a little of the crust that is left in the loaf bottom when it slips out. The great news was that the White Wheat loaf was very evenly cooked in the middle and the bread was just dense and firm enough. Normally one slice is like two with these breadmakers compared to your store bought breads that might be lighter so I usually cut one slice in half to make a smaller sandwich because it's very filling. I also fudged some and used Agave in the Raw Nectar (tastes sweeter than Honey) instead of the granulated white sugar in the recipe. Dr. Oz says Agave is better for us anyway because it's 100% Natural Organic. Plus you can lick the measuring spoon afterwards for your reward. On the whole, this was a very positive experience. I'm sad we can't make a 1 Pound loaf in this Bread Machine like some competitor machines offer that might be better for toasting because at 5 inches high, the top of the bread is just above the standard heating elements so it won't be toasted completely. Maybe the consolation is, we can make a 2-Pound loaf that rises higher and cut that slice in two with no crust in the middle!

I bought this bread machine ''On Sale''.. ($38.00) So far, I've made 2 loaves of bread... I'm IMPRESSED with this machine, it can do so much more than just bake bread .. I purchased bread machine flour & yeast with my order... So far, each LOAF has been FANTASTIC.... You can't beat the price, so don't let that scare you... It makes 1# 1.5# & 2# Loaves... Lots of choices, so easy to choose from the ''control panel'' ... Very easy to clean, comes with 2 ''paddles'' as well... I like the fact that the ''Container & Paddle'' are all inside, nothing to spill out into the interior of the bread maker, like my old ''BreadMan'' is... The Container & paddle are ''non-stick'' which makes the bread so much easier, it slides out nicely!! The bread comes out ''square'', I've added a photo of ''Herb Bread'' from a recipe on ''Allrecipes.com''.... Fantastic Flavor... try it too.... BUY IT, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG!!!

I decided to buy a bread machine after several disappointing purchases from my neighbourhood bakeries. The last loaf I bought cost $3.00 and was as hard as a rock. I couldn't even use a slice as a frisbee; it was too heavy. What made it worse was that the lady assured me the bread was baked that day. I received my Hamilton Beach bread machine last night and couldn't wait to try a honey wheat recipe I found on AllRecipes.com. Today was my first time baking bread - ever. It was hard to wait 15 minutes to cool the bread down. The smell was enticing. It was delicious - soft, warm, light, mmmmmm. My two year old son was adamant that he was not hungry, yet ate 2 slices. He even rejected eggs - his favorite breakfast food -so he could have "more bread please, mommy." Next time, I will try the dough setting and bake it in traditional loaf pan. So far, I am happy with my purchase. I will try other multigrain/whole grain recipes and give an update.

I'm now retired and live in a very small one bedroom apartment. The kitchen is a joke and I love to cook so I needed a mini bread machine to fit into a mini kitchen. I couldn't afford the mini but Hamilton Beach had this smaller machine that will fit within a one foot square space. Actually, it's the smallest one I could find of the regular sized bread machines. It's perfect! I've never cared for the baking pan of any bread machine and this one is no exception. I only use the Dough cycle then shape and bake my bread in a 'normal' bread pan in the oven. This machine has all the 'bells and whistles' as all the others have but will fit within a smaller space on your counter top. It'll do jams and jellys and cakes and a 2lb loaf of bread as well. I'm not all that crazy about most of the machine being made of durable plastic but Hamilton Beach has never failed me in the past so I give it a go. If you're looking for a smaller sized bread maker at a fantastic price, online Walmart and Hamilton Beach is a win win combination, in my book. Happy bread making!

    • A. You CAN, but different kinds of flour have different qualities, different percentages of protein, etc., and that affects the texture and how much it rises. I found a couple of good "bread" books at our local library in the 641.815 shelf. Normally you should use "Bread Flour" for at least part of it.

    • A. You can but it is recommended to use bread flour. If you use all purpose flour it would be suitable for "quick bread" or to use on a quick setting. Self raising flour is not suitable in combination with yeast, it really is only suitable for cake making. If you want to use whole wheat flour, the loaf might be smaller in size and heavier in texture as it is a heavier flour.

    • A. Absolutely. Whatever your recipe calls for. However if it says specifically "bread flour" in the recipe, some peopel substitute but you lose the texture, denisty and volume. (Same goes for sifting - if it calls for sifting...SIFT. You WILL notice the difference all around.)

As far as I'm concered if it can handle ground whole wheat it has the power to for any flour that I can think off. My old Welbult kept cracking the paddles because of the whole wheat, this one is really easy to understand, and has 12 settings even pizza dough!
