Perfect Home Accessory

Very functional, easy initial set up, and intuitive controls. And, I must mention that I love the compact size - which I wasn't expecting. This unit is replacing a much-appreciated, but aging HP LaserJet printer and a Canon home photo-copier. To my delight, this new HP MFP Printer is half the size of the Canon copier, completely replaces the separate laser printer, and adds scan and fax capabilities. In addition, the copy and print functionality exceeds those of the above mentioned units I'm recycling. Finally, totally love the wireless functionality. I expected to love the ability to print wireless from anywhere in the house; but, I didn't understand that the scan and fax features are also wireless. So, when I insert a document to scan into the automatic page feed, I can scan that to my PC desktop from anywhere in the house. There were a few other features I've not yet tried; but, so far this is a much-valued addition to our home. And, btw, the price was very competitive. Well done, HP.

Works with Linux

It's difficult to find a printer that works well with Linux. I wanted a monochrome laser all-in-one and looked at Samsung, Brother, and Canon as well as HP; however, according to my research, only HP appeared to be reasonably easy to get working with Linux. It did take a little work, but the M1217nfw does work well with Ubuntu 11.10 after using hpsetup to install a plugin it requires. Scanning, printing, and wireless (though the latter is more a function of what router you have) all work well. I was able to set it up completely using the wireless connection. I like the standby feature. It wakes up quickly, but I print/scan fairly infrequently, so I tend to shut it off for more power savings between uses. Even then, it only takes about 20 seconds to re-establish a wireless connection and be ready to go. The only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is a completely enclosed letter-size paper tray. The one it has seems like a dust magnet to me, so I usually take out the paper and close the door when I won't be using it for a while.

Just bought the M1217nfw. I also just bought an iMac 27inch w Lion 10.7, I also own another desktop pc, laptop pc, iphone and ipad2. I bought printer for its flatbed design, scanning, faxing and airprint. I was very worried that seamless, wireless setup was going to be a nightmare with these devices and because of past reviews on Lion 10.7 Mac setup. Out of the box, there was no instructions on anything other than basic USB setup. However, I made a call to HP support and may have gotten the best phone support that I have ever had. Ruby in Canada was awesome. She setup my Mac, desktop pc, laptop pc, e-print, airprint, scanning and faxing for me, step by step. She even called back to follow up and make sure my phone line was faxing well (initial call made from my single home line). The process took 2 hours but well worth it and I can't say enough about the support I got. After everything has been set up, it all works great. Only 2 wires out of my printer....power and fax line. Highly recommend the unit because of its functions and the support I got.

Great Printer

I've only had it for a day, but I love it already. Setup was straightforward, although the Quick Start instructions could stand a lot of refinement. They rely mostly on pictures which in some cases I didn't find intuitive. I wasn't able to do the totally wireless installation due to my network being secured with the SSID supressed, but after connecting with the supplied USB cable, it went easily and quickly. When I added the printer to a desktop in another part of the house, I had a little difficulty, mostly of my own making. Once I loaded the installation CD and went through the procedure again, it went smoothly and installed properly. The printer is very fast compared to my old InkJet, and the print quality is excellent. Copying with the printer is almost as fast as a standard copy machine. I haven't played with the FAX much, so really can't comment on it. It appears to be pretty straightforward though.

ADF issues

I own both the M1212nf as well as this one (purchased at the same time). They are the same other than wifi capability. I am having ADF issues with both of them from day 1. Below is the review I wrote for M1212nf: I have owned about 10 different HP printers, this is the worst one. The finish feels cheap and flimsy, which I am OK with it because of the low price. However, the ADF (auto. document feeder) for this machine is the worst I have seen from HP. It won't pick up paper properly from day 1. Too much it will stop halfway through, too little (<2 pages) it won't pick up at all. After 3 month, I couldn't stand it anymore and called warranty service. After spending >2 hours over the phone "trouble shooting" this issue, the rep finally agreed with me and replaced it with a REFURBISHED unit... The refurbished unit's ADF is at least picking the paper, however, a lot of my scans are coming out crooked.
