What you really need to know, good, and better
This laptop was a great deal at $263. I bought it with the intention of turning it into a modern Windows 7 Professional laptop, and it can be done. The good news is this: The Intel quad-core processor is proven and only uses 7.5 watts of power on average. Is it a rocket-ship? No... Will it satisfy the majority of everyday users? Definitely. If you plan on using Windows 8.1 and that is good enough for you, or want to upgrade to Windows 10 and feel satisfied, then this will do what you want outside of "hardcore gaming." Enjoy. But for those of you who want to unleash the hardware on this and roll it back to Windows 7, know this: It is 100% doable, as I have done, but it takes a lot of patience, effort, time, and some moderate computer experience from the past to accomplish it. I was not personally satisfied with the Windows 8.1 OS. The tiles, separate screens, gadgets, etc... that may be fine for a tablet in a lesser interface, but for a laptop for those who want a little bit more functionality, it is all a memory hog and drags down the hardware as well as the backwards-compatibility of software in many aspects, depending on your uses. Surfing the net and writing a document is fine. If you want to be a power-user, this OS does not fly. The good thing here though is that the hardware of the laptop itself has many promising aspects. The hard drive is a run-of the-mill 5400 RPM Toshiba HDD. Nothing special in the speed department, but it gets the job done. The better rewards are the low power consumption of the quad-core CPU, the integrated Intel HD graphics, DDR3 RAM at 4GB and 1333 MHz, USB 2.0x2 and USB 3.0x1, a great wireless Ethernet controller, and (for those who want to) drivers available through HP, Intel, and last but not least, Microsoft's website, that will help transition this from a mediocre Windows 8.1 machine into a Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) semi-cruiser. For those who already have or know how to acquire a Windows 7 Pro x64 Edition DVD and license, or especially already have it on-hand, then all you need is time. For everyone else, $60 can get you a copy of the software with a valid key. The BIOS and the operating system of Windows 8+ are now integrated into each other, so the first thing you need to do is have all of your software prepared BEFORE you make changes to the BIOS to disable the locked security between the BIOS, OS, and HDD, enable legacy support for the OS and USB, then then format the hard disk back to MBR/NTFS through the admin command prompt in Windows 7 Pro setup, and go from there. Another help is to have a computer handy that is already running Windows 7 and is Internet-accessable, in order to download a few preliminary drivers after the initial Win7 install, which will help getting the wireless and LAN drivers running on the laptop, and then allow you to go through HP's website to download and install the correct drivers for Windows 7 Pro x64. Afterwards, going to Microsoft's website will get you some additional drivers for the PCI/USB bridge and some other chipset support, and then Intel's website will provide the rest of the correct drivers, and then re-visiting Realtek and HP's website should finish it off before you do a final Windows update. Once everything is done, you (like me) should have all compatible drivers for a clean, fast, and efficient Windows 7 Professional system with nothing neglected, everything working with no conflicts or other problems. Either way you cut it, if you like Windows 8.1 out of the box (or Windows 10), then this is a good price at $263. If you want it to create a Windows 7 Professional machine, it is worth the effort. Either way, it is a great laptop for the money and realistic usage expectations.

Hubby bought this for me for my birthday. Looks great and has a free opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10. However as soon as I turn it on and it starts booting up the disk drive pops open. I close it thinking maybe I hit something to open it. Nope it keeps happening but I figure i'll get it set up and maybe can figure that part out. Well couldn't connect to internet . I finally turn modem off and back on and get it connected well I had to restart computer and then no internet connection again....no matter how long I tried. Everything else would connect to our internet but this laptop. Not to mention disk drive continues to pop open. It's going back tomorrow!

HP Flyer Red Laptop Windows 8.1 - Love it!

My Acer laptop with Windows 7 bit the dust. It was great while it lasted, but eventually the keyboard quit working, a couple keys at a time. After reading many reviews before purchasing a new laptop, it looked like lots of people were unhappy with Windows 8.1 so I was leaning more to finding another Windows 7. After going in the store to look and "feel" what was in stock, I went with this beautiful red HP with Windows 8.1 and a "15 day like it or bring it back guarantee" and affordable price. I've been using Windows since the 3.1 version and every change took getting use to, but Windows 8.1 is a breeze! And, if you prefer the older Windows version, there's a "desktop" app you can choose to work from that's just like the Windows 7 version. This computer is fast and sleek. I'm happy with my purchase! De-boxed, set-up, and started using in a few short minutes!

better than expected

This is my first laptop. I never needed one but have been looking for one for some time to do some writing. Anyway I hate windows and am a mac person, but $1200 for a 11" 13" laptop was not a feasible choice. Looking for economy found a lot of junk. This pc has everything I needed and is inexpensive, and seems very sturdy. Paid $319 plus tax and that is the best deal I have found. Has Windows 8.1 don't know if that is a + or -, but I am not a Windows fan. Nice color, keyboard is good, heavier than some other laptops I am sure. Only negs I have found are no keyboard lighting, Microsoft is a pain and wants too much control of my personal data, and the battery is very limited in time 5hrs it says. Has a lot more free games than I thought, but did not buy for games. I don't use wifi but it does fine on my firewire. Has cd player and that works ok. Overall I am pleased with my purchase, and hope this pc last for a long time.

My little red machine

This computer is very easy to use right out of the box. And the battery life is excellent. Before purchasing this, I was scared to death because I had heard all kinds of horror stories about Windows 8. It took me about half an hour to get it going on line. I had to familiarize myself a little with Windows 8 but I'm having no problems. Having said that, let me advise people that it does not come with word processing or spreadsheet software such as Microsoft office. But it is a good, basic laptop for people like myself who want to catch up on email, surf the internet and use social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter.

I love this laptop, it's amazing!

I just bought this laptop today at my local Wal-mart for only $319! I didn't expect it to work as fast and as good as it does. I love this laptop! I can play my games, listen to music. The audio is great I love it! I didn't expect such great quality for such a cheap price! It's a must get!

Very Nice and Very Fast

I love this new laptop. so worth the price i paid for which was $319. I bought it last week and its amazing. its fast and it has an amazing battery. My old laptops battery went out in 2 hours but this one has been going for 4 hours now and still has more than 50%. The only thing i dont like is windows 8.1. It takes a verrrryyyy long time to update. it took me about 3-4 hours the other night. but overall, this is an amazing laptop and i would recommend it to anyone who is on a budget and needs a great laptop.

Decent laptop for someone on a budget

I purchased this laptop to replace a 5 year old MacBook. Because I'm a college student, I was tight on cash and needed a laptop quick. I picked this up for $349 and I'm surprised at how many features it has. It has a bright. vibrant screen, a decent webcam, and a re-writable dvd drive as well as a nice keyboard that works well for small hands. The red color is almost metallic and makes this laptop very sleek. The cons of this laptop would be that the speakers aren't the best and appear to have static. Also, the processor of this computer is only a quad core Pentium , and heavy gamers or designers would most likely do better with an I-3 or higher processor. However, for someone who uses their laptop for presentations or word processing, this computer is good. My only other complaint is that I'm not fond of Windows 8.1 but I have a preference for apple .

Has everything I need.

Had a little problem with a virus out of the box but HP Support helped me resolve the problem. Called them and they walked me through the fix. For the money it is a great computer. Does everything I need to do and quite fast as well. Just set it up about 10 days ago but so far so good.

I never give 5 stars but this is close!

I just got this computer and so far it is GREAT! Took me less than 2 hours to set-up and upload a ton files. I am a Windows 7 lover but I was very impressed with the fact that Windows 8.1 synced my Windows 8 (previous laptop that my teenagers broke screen) quickly. I actually had it uploading files, setting up McAfee and my Office 2013 all at the same time and was still able to work with Firefox with very little delay. I love the color, lightness, and keyboard. All in all great laptop for what I would consider a very good price!

not a good choice!

I don't know if it's the HP or it's windows 8.1 but this simply doesn't work well. I took the first one back thinking there was something wrong with the computer. But the second one does the same thing. It's slow to load. Firefox will freeze just after a few minutes and you can't reboot. You have to shut it off and start all over. You can't get to the task menu because nothing works at that point. It's very frustrating. I've got this second one now and don't know what to do with it. I have 2 or 3 days left to decide if I want to return it as well. I tried to call for customer service help and they wanted me to PAY for help. I told them I just bought it and it should work, that I shouldn't have to pay for help. Just not very happy with it.

3. Hello! No, the processor in this unit cannot be upgraded. It utilizes a mobile processor that is soldered, or in essence welded, onto the motherboard. To replace the processor would mean replacing the motherboard and other components as well. However, as HPTeam suggested, you may want to check with technical support or HP Total Care in regards to upgrading the processor.
