Great Buy!

I purchased two of these laptops for my teenagers on Black Friday. I was planning to just wrap them up and put them under the tree until I read the awful reviews. So needless to say, I opened both of them up today to check them out in case I needed to return them. I figured I'd set them up and see if I run into any glitches. It's been about 6 hours and so far they are wonderful! My kids plan on using them for school purposes mainly and I know this will serve them well. Windows 8, if you're not familiar with it, takes some getting used to, but after a while, I got the hang of it. There were a lot of pre-loaded apps that I didn't care for, so I just deleted them. I did try to download, from the Internet, a printer driver so they could print wirelessly, but it was too slow, so I canceled it. Not sure if it was the computer or my network. If you are a gamer, you probably want to stay away from this because of the processor, but for beginners, this was a great buy! I wish I had one for myself (and I have the iPad 2)! Oh, the DVD drive does stick a little, but to me it's not a big deal, my kids won't be using that feature much.

DON'T BUY THIS COMPUTER!!!

I bought this computer during the "Black Friday" rush and thought I was getting an amazing deal. After I had done the initial set-up and updates, I had expected to see a significant improvement in web browsing and downloads as compared to my 5 year old e-machine that I have been using. A very big mistake on my part. The touch screen doesn't work properly, it keeps freezing up at random times, it won't play simple graphic games and I even had trouble navigating the Walmart site!!! This was absolutely the worst purchase I made and I hope I can return it.

Keyboard Malfunction

Bought this today at the Black Friday sale. Got it home and was setting it up when I noticed that the Backspace button and the G and H keys did not function. Needless to say I'm disappointed that the keyboard doesn't fully function and I'm taking it back tonight. I hope that they can exchange it, because even though this keyboard had flaws, the overall price and value was great.

Don't Buy This Computer!

Just like another reviewer, within days of receiving this computer, it went into "reconfiguring updates to Windows" mode and then froze at "12% complete". Talking to "tech support" to try and fix the problem was a nightmare because of the agent's very heavy accent coupled with a poor connection. He acknowledged that this was a "known problem", and after 1-1/2 excruciating hours on the phone, he transferred me to a supervisor who agreed to send me a recovery disc while repeatedly telling me that the disc cost $50, but "they were waiving the charge", like it was my fault that their computer is defective! I don't know if this glitch is HP's fault or Microsoft's because of a failure in Windows 8, but I am still waiting for the recovery disc, and the end of the Mayan calendar will come before I get it!

Black Fri purchase, and so far I'm glad I did. Loaded with memory for the price, first of all. I see from other reviews that some buyers had problems with keyboard, screen, etc. I don't care for Windows 8 either, but for the money I'm getting used to it. It's faster than the 2-yr-old HP, similar attributes, sitting next to it here on my desk. You do some housekeeping and Win8 looks a lot like 7 and you learn to avoid the dopey start screen. Now here's the problem it came with. As mentioned in other reviews, there is an update difficulty, where Windows auto installs updates and then tells you to restart and when you do, you find it is stuck at 12%, trying to configure the updates. My only recourse was to shut it off manually (depress the power button) and repeat that a few times until it got the idea that it needed to troubleshoot. It could not give me a start screen or anything else but a horrid loop of "configuring updates" and restarting. But in the troubleshoot you have to restore the thing to purchase condition (if it's brand new, that doesn't lose much data) and then DISABLE Norton, which presumably you enabled right after purchase. According to Microsoft wizards online, that is where the problem lies. I did that and downloaded free Lavasoft instead and set the puter not to auto update (who needs trouble? wait for MS to fix their updates, or just avoid Norton, or have Norton scan the new files before installing, take your pick). Since then the computer has behaved admirably. For the price I can't believe anyone doesn't take the time to study up and figure out what's wrong. It's the updates not agreeable to Norton, that's all, folks. :)

I bought this computer as a doorbuster deal Thursday. Thinking I was getting an amazing deal. WRONG! As soon as I powered it up and did the initial setup I got the first error and from there it was downhill. It wouldn't download the free 60 day trial of Microsoft Office after 3 hours it gave me and error. I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it and got the second error. It also had blacks line going through the screen. It stalled most of the time navigating. Horrible purchase! I returned it! Way too much time invested waiting in the line to get the computer and all the time trying to get it to work once I got it home!

Bought this Thanksgiving Night, the Black Friday Specials. Bought another one the next no day. MISTAKE!! 1st. LAPTOP : It recognized my mouse from my old laptop. BUT The screen had flashing horizontal lines. Returned it on Saturday. REPLACEMENT: Works fine for surfing the net but not much else. Seemed ok. Figured we could use another. Then we noticed the faults: DVD Door sticks. the mouse from my previous laptop cannot be recognized (but it worked on the original). 2nd LAPTOP: Seemed to be working fine, the touchpad is SENSITIVE. Gosh forbid you hit the pad while typing, you lose your place or it opens up another app. I shut it down and it began to update and froze at 13%. It took 3 hours of restarting, pulling the battery, F8 and whatnot before I could enter recovery mode. Tried to restore, that froze during the restore finalizing, so we started the process all over again. Finally got it able to refresh and I'm about to box it up to return it. The DVD door sticks on this one too, and it does not recognize my old mouse. Both are going to be returned in the morning, Stay clear of this laptop.

The computer while doing updates gets stuck at 13% and never updates, and then finally after several hours it returned back to normal. Then the second night of trying to use it, it did the updates again, same issue and then it did its own system restore. This thing is a mess. I hate returning things, but something like this you have to.... and for such a good buy at the time for 279.00. I might try another, that's if I can locate one.

I got this laptop for my husband, I was pretty excited due to the price. Ever since we got it, we've had nothing but trouble with it. All he wants the laptop for is to use basic web browsing, Netflix and to do college work. Factory installed apps failed to update since day 1, Windows 8 wants to update but it also fails. This is my first HP brand, I heard they were worth it so I went with it. I've had this laptop since Friday (11/23/12) and have had to do 3 factory resets already. I'm returning it tomorrow and never looking back. My cheap Aspire computer works like a pro, compared to this HP.

Good For The Money

Purchased this laptop as part of Black Friday sale. After looking at other reviews, I guess I am lucky because the laptop works great! Windows 8 takes some getting used to and the laptop itself is a very basic unit, but for the money, its a great value. I certainly wouldn't recommend this laptop for gaming or anything like that. But for web surfing, watching Netflix etc... This laptop is great! Thanks Walmart for the great Black Friday deal! Seems some people think this should have a touch screen, but it doesn't and why would it for $279? It also lacks a bluray player, and HDMI ports but that's okay with me.
