.....but I am the biggest idiot ever! First of all the printer is great. I bought it to print pages for a family tree book I created, and it worked fast and flawlessly printing both sides of the heavy duty paper I used. It also handled printing on the even thicker outside covers. The only criticism I have is the location of the power switch in the extreme rear on the right side. Why not make it easier to reach and put it more to the front? I am an idiot because after printing the pages of my book and going on to other things, I realized in my rush for a bargain that I was now without a scanner and copier. I should've bought a mono all in one laser printer! So I hooked up my old all in one and have two printers hooked up to my home computer. I didn't feel confident enough to try the wireless feature, but that's just me and my senior moments. If I hit the Lotto, I will buy a Brother all in one laser printer and save some space here in my home office.

Generally I am very happy with this purchase. I purchased specifically for the duplex printing and the wireless operation. The duplex printing is generally pretty good but if you print more that 10 pages (double sided) at a time you chances of the paper jamming increases. Secondly when I originally set up the printer wirelessly with the included CD everything connected but this process seemed complicated. When I upgraded my Mac operating system I lost wireless connectivity and I did not have the CD to try and reconnect. Brother CS tried to help me through the process but I was unable to achieve wireless operation. I wound up connecting the printer to my Airport Extreme via a USB Cable so that it can be used by all printers on my network. I do have a competitors inkjet wireless printer and no matter how many times I have upgraded my Mac operating system the wireless connectivity with the competitors product never failed to connect wirelessly.

A few weeks ago I purchased my Brother HL-2270DL. Setup was a bit of a problem at first. I didn't know where the on-off seittch was. How embarrassing. But I don't think the quick install guide showed where the switch was. Once I found the switch, setup was a breeze! I hooked my printer up by Ethernet and USB cable. In case the Internet went down, I didn't want to lose my printer too, so I hooked it up also with USB. Operating the HL-2270 DW is very easy and I LOVE being able to print in duplex. I haven't given the printer much of a workout yet because my printing workload is not very big. I bought the HL-2270 DW to replace my (get this!) HP 5L LaserJet printer which I loved. I repaired it a couple of times, but it finally give up the ghost. Worse yet, Windows 7 didn't support it. Give the HL-2270 DW a try! You won't be disappointed! It prints quickly and the print quality is top notch! The machines quality looks to be very good too.

Excellent Value But Some Quirks

My wife finally beat our old printer into submission, so I bought this model at my local Office Depot which was offering a competitive price. Setup was easy and the built-in duplexing saves paper. It's reasonably fast and produces sharp clear documents. For the money, this printer represents a remarkable value and has performed well under heavy use. We've printed about two 10-ream cartons of paper both sides since our purchase. It does have a couple of annoying quirks: 1. When the toner is running low or the printer "thinks" that the toner is running low the endless pop-up reminders are annoying. Rather than having the printer stop printing even when there is still toner in the cartridge, which is wasteful, I would rather just run the copies until the toner is exhausted. 2. The manual feeder is set for #10 envelopes which print okay, but after printing an envelope, the printer stops printing and won't restart until I turn it off and then on again to reset it. Aside from those two minor complaints, I would given this product five stars.

My wife and I have 3 computers in the house and previously we were sharing the printer attached to one of the computers. Now, we can print without worrying about whether the other computer is on. The other feature that sold me was duplex. I really like being able to print on both sides of the paper automatically. The only change I would make would be to make auto duplex the default rather than having to configure it on each computer. Wireless network setup worked very well for the first computer (using a USB cable to configure). However, on the other two computers, the printer showed up twice. If that happens to you, ignore the first entry (with http:) and choose the second entry. You can then use the Windows Update option to select the printer driver directly from the internet, rather than using the CD. Brother tech support couldn't tell me why the printer was showing up twice so I just experimented and found out the second entry worked. The first entry might have worked if I had already installed the printer driver but I didn't bother to test that theory.

A Very Good Printer

This is my third Brother laser printer, which I've now been using for about two months. It replaces a Brother HL-2040, which is still working, but needs to have the drum replaced, and that would cost almost as much as a new printer. So I bought this one, and have been quite happy with it. I particularly like the two-sided print option - a real time saver. One caveat though - this feature only works if you're printing in a portrait format. You can use it for landscape printing, but the back side of your page will be upside down. I've found the print quality, especially on halftones, to be somewhat better than the HL-2040, and the print speed is maybe just a bit faster. All in all, I'm a very satisfied customer. If I live long enough to need another laser printer (not too likely - I'm 81), it would almost surely be a Brother. I would recommend this model to anyone looking for a high-quality low-cost b&w printer.

Big Bang for the Buck, but not quite a home run

Overall, the printer is excellent. It prints quickly with excellent text. Halftones in photos are okay, not great, but acceptable, and that's okay. I didn't purchase this as a photo printer. My biggest gripe is how convoluted it is to establish a wireless connection with a Mac-based network. It's not as automatic as other printers that incorporate Bonjour, Apple's protocol that makes printer connections a snap. Instead, Brother uses a complicated software solution that complicates the process way more than it needs to be. Once connected, however, all works well. My concerns with Brother's solution is how well Brother will support their software as Mac OS X evolves. If they'd incorporated Bonjour, the monkey would be on Apple's back to keep things current. While I recommend this printer, it's mostly due to Bang for the Buck. I don't think you'll find a better laser printer for the price of this one.

I'm very impressed with this little printer. It is very fast, and has good quality print. I docked it one star because I find the wireless setup somewhat confusing. I have a LAN in my house with several computers. The setup procedure is first to connect the printer via USB or ENet to configure it, and then connect to it wirelessly. This procedure worked fine on the first computer. But on subsequent computers, instead of just installing the drivers, I kept getting stuck in trying to configure the printer again. I think Brother needs to either change the way the printer is configured, or make adding subsequent print drivers to other computers on your LAN a lot more clear than it currently is. I have many years of computing and networking experience, so it's not like I'm a novice in trying to get this to work. It's just needlessly confusing. Once installed, however, the printer works great.

I bought the HL-2270DW for my small business with the express purpose of reducing the load on my MFC-9840 CDW (color multi-function). Despite the "High yield" label, and despite my operating solely in 'toner saver" mode, I have very quickly gone through the "starter" toner and the first high yield cartridge - even though we are nowhere near 2600 pages of print. I understand that the "estimated" number of pages assumes a 5% coverage rate (which may be unrealistic), but I chafe at the sense that I have been 'roped in' (like everyone else): the business model is not about the price of the printer, its about the number of "consumables". As they said on the corner of Lennox and 125th, "the first one is free, man". Appreciate the lifetime customer service, the reliability (this is my second Brother printer - both working like a charm) but I do feel a bit sheep-like, and would rather not.

Nice Budget Printer

I was attracted to the Brother HL-2270DW because of the price and duplex printing. I haven't been disappointed. It prints reliably, reasonably quietly, and with high-quality text. Characters are crisp and dark, though perhaps a little thinner than some printers. I see this as an advantage: pages have a clean look. The duplexing is simple: the paper is ALMOST ejected into the output tray, then pulled back into the printer for the other side. There are a couple of downsides: there's a lot of paper curl. A menu setting buried in the printer properties lets you reduce it a little, but it's still there. Also, the bypass "tray" for envelopes and cards is cheesy. It's hard to get stuff to enter the printer straight. Neither of these are deal-breakers, though. This Brother is an expensive, reliable printer, with the bonus of duplexing. Most of us buy a monochrome laser printer for the value: the cost per copy is usually less than a comparable ink jet. This Brother certainly fills the bill. I've purchased four Brothers over the last several years for home and office use and have yet to be disappointed.
