Very good invention

This is my second. My mom kidnapped my first one as a way of speaking. These devices are a great substitute for a smart TV and even better because they are easy to use.

Utter piece of junk

Plagued with reconnect me errors on both 2.4 and 5GHz. My first gen chromecast has been working fine on the same router for over 2 years.

Nice gift

It a good product!

Inexpensive and Works Well, Exactly As Advertised

The Google Chromecast seems to me to be the easiest and least expensive way to get into casting and streaming. The low cost doesn't mean "cheap", the device is technically up-to-date with plenty of memory. It does everything it says it will do and does it flawlessly. I've used it intensively---mainly with Netflix---without a single problem. Pros: (1) It is inexpensive and simple to install; (2) TV connects dependably to the Google Home app, which is also easily downloaded; (3) Zero tech problems so far, great picture on my 50" TV, no buffering or any play interruptions or glitches whatsoever. Cons: (1) Remember, it doesn't come with a remote but that is a trivial concern because play control is via your iOS or Android device; (2) Keep in mind that Play controls are limited to play/pause and quick 30-second jump rewind---no fast-forward or full rewind. I use my regular TV remote to control volume. I recommend Chromecast without any reservations, it is a bargain and works like a charm. Thanks for considering my comments.

MUCH better than the previous model

Have had an original version of this and gave it away because of excessive buffering which made it a waste of money. This one...have it hooked up to my mini-projector and it works like a dream. Only had very little buffering and that was when I was doing quite a few other things at the same time on my PC. Unlike the original...Google has done away with the Chromecast app I was used to using in the Chrome browser and my tablet/smartphone. After a couple of hours of trying to get it to work...finally found updated directions on how to use the browser from the PC. After this...was watching some TV shows from my TV tuner card. The worst part about this is the lack of updated documentation and the software since this has been released. With 35+ years of computer experience and running a media server to have to deal with the lack of clear directions because of upgrades is a travesty and needs to be better communicated for an absolute beginner.

Can't ever turn off chromecast

Chromecast is able to turn on a tv via hdmi-cec using just your cell phone or computer, but it will never turn off unless you physically go to the tv and turn it off. Not only that but it will always have text in the same spot as a "backdrop" screen-saver, the worst possible type of screen save due to the image burn-in on the screen. If I leave my laptop connected to the tv eventually it'll go to sleep. If I leave a dvd player connected to the tv eventually it will go to sleep. Same with xbox or play station, same with any other device I can think of. Chromecast will NEVER sleep or stop sending input to the tv. The only solutions are to physically shut off the tv, to unplug the chromecast, or to set a sleep timer on the tv. It would be pretty easy for google to set chromecast to sleep after 30-60min without input, or added an off/standby mode. It'd also be great if they just allowed the option to turn off the potentially screen damaging "backdrop" screensaver.

Makes TV really smart

I have a Toshiba smart TV. It's painfully slow (several minutes to turn on the smart functions), to launch Netflix or Youtube. Most of the "Smart" applications are obsolete, or outdated - the company stopped updating the firmware after the first year. So now my TV is 4-years old and the screen is perfect but the software is bad. For $35 ChromeCast added all the modern functionality to my TV. The operation is flawless, all the apps supporting ChromeCast are happily casting to it and we're having lots of fun with my kids when everyone has control with their phone. The installation took 10 seconds: plug the HDMI into the TV, plug the USB cable into the power outlet... done. The software part was even easier. Installed the app, it found the ChromeCast device immediately and even sent to it the wi-fi password, so I didn't have to set it up. Bottom line: a high-class device, perfect solution for non-smart TVs.

Easy breezy

I was looking for a way to cast my Netlfix and HBO Go apps onto my VIZIO (no smart feature) and this was the answer to my prayers. It's so easy to set up - I can use my iPhone or my iPad. Very affordable as well. Keep in mind there's no remote - you will be asked to download the App to your smartphone or tablet and you control it (fast forward, pause, rewind etc.) from your device. The clarity is perfect and no delay or buffering. If your TV has an extra USB slot - that's perfect. since it's powered that way. If not, it comes with a regular plug so make sure you have the capacity to keep it powered. My TV only has one so I bought a USB port that can connect multiple USB devices. Lastly, there are a ton of apps that are supported by Chrome cast - make sure the ones you want are on there before you buy. They are all listed on their web site. Plug in and enjoy!

Nice media add on for a great price

11/19/15 Well after a few attempts to connect the Chromecast second generation to my WiFi network it's now working just fine... I had to download "Photo-cast for Chromecast" For some reason I couldn't use the photos app that came with my cell phone.. I have an Andriod LG L34C Optimus Fuel.... It finds the WiFi network very quickly and casting is now a breeze.. Absolutely love the photo screen saver that came with it.. Would love to see Google label where the photos were taken....however..and add a few more apps to explore. I presently have a Blu-Ray player also connected to my system... I purchased a smart HDMI spliter and it works just fine great picture quality and sound..Makes it very easy to go from my Blu-Ray to the Chromecast module without unplugging anything... So far very satisfied .... Would highly recommend this to a friend.. Michael.. Age 64 Waterbury, Ct..

Great Streaming Device

I own a Vizio smart TV that is several years old. It has good streaming capability built in but there is some content that is not available. The new Vizio TVs come with Chromecast built-in. I decided to buy the Chromecast to fill in some missing content and basically upgraded my Vizio for $25 instead of HUNDREDS. I got added content and I got all the extra features that Chromecast offers. I like the interface that Chromecast offers when I am not streaming from an app, there are some incredible images. I like that I don't have to open an extra app to stream from my Android phone. I was already using Google's Photos to store my pictures and Photos is fully integrated with Chromecast which makes it easy to view and showcase my pics on the big screen. I am still exploring all the features and apps, but I feel my money was well spent and I am very impressed so far.
