    best dumbell set

I recommend the metal plate dumbbell and barbell sets over the cement filled plastic sets. First, the metal plates are smaller and super durable. I have found the cement sets to split along the seam over time, especially if they get dropped, and sometimes they feel like there can be airpockets in the weight. I have had some of the cement dust come out of the splits. They are bulky, so you can't get as much weight on the dumbell. Second, the plastic/cement sets usually come with the butterfly pincher type of collars that keep the weights on, whereas the metal dumbells come with the threaded ends and the spinning threaded collars. There is no chance of the threaded collar coming off during the exercise. The pincher type can get loose over time with use, and sometimes they actually get stiff and hard to remove. Go with the metal plates and threaded collars.

    Excellent quality, couldn't be happier.

These dumbbells are much higher quality that I was expecting for the price, because many similar dumbbells cost a lot more. Each handle has a plastic grip on it that definitely seems durable, and is both comfortable and very grippy. The handles and the weights are coated with what seems like a very sturdy finish that I wouldn't expect to chip off unless I were using them on concrete, maybe. The collars that hold the weights on are all-metal, so they'll never break, and they come off and go on very quickly and easily, making it a snap to change weights around. I'm impressed that Gold's Gym built the handles large enough that you can add extra weight to your dumbbells when you've out-muscled these :) Overall, I couldn't be happier with the product, and I can't imagine what higher-priced models of the same screw-on design could offer that these don't.
Great buy. Just wondering if they sell just the weight plates? to add to this existing dumbbell set.

Excellent set of beginner adjustable dumbbells!

I bought these because I needed a set of weights. I wanted to have adjustable dumbbells because I know I will need to increase the weight I lift as I get into better shape. This is an inexpensive, but good quality way to go. Each dumbbell alone, without plates or collars on it, is only 2.5 lbs - a great amount for beginners of all ages. But as you progress you can add up to a total of 40 lbs (20lb. each dumbbell) or even more if you buy additional individual weight plates, which I did see next to this box set at the store. I started using them with a 2.5 lb. plate on each for a workout dvd, then when I got tired 2/3 of the way through but didn't want to quit, I simply took off the 5 lbs. of plates and continued with just the 2.5 lb. handles. It isn't the most convenient adjustment method out there today, but the collars (pieces that hold the weights in place) do screw on and off very easily. This set looks good too, I don't feel bad leaving them out in plain sight. The only downside I would say is the size - they are a little bigger and bulkier than some dumbbells. Overall, I got what I was expecting for a very fair price. I'm satisfied and would definitely recommend these to anyone!

Nice dumbell set with a unique coating.

I have owned this dumbbell set for just about two weeks now. The dark grey coating is a hard, baked-on finish that looks nice and definitely should prove to be very durable as well. The center section of the dumbbells bars have a textured finish which offers a good grip surface and is neither spongy feeling or rock hard at all. It has a slight barrel shape to it which is a bit more comfortable on the hands than a coarse, knurled steel feels. The set also includes four 6 pound plates which can be used to make a variety of uncommon poundage combinations. The dumbbell handles accept the spin lock collars with a coarse thread quickly and easily. The dumbbell handles are 14" long and will accommodate standard type plates with a 1" hole in the center. Overall a very nice and versatile dumbbell set at a reasonable price.
