I was looking for some solid weight plates instead of vinyl, they are and their is 2 dumbbells in the 40Lbs box set, and they're 20 Lbs each and adjustable from 8 to 20 Lbs. I found out those types of weights are cast iron, there good weights, and have hand grips for the bars. I just need to figure out if I can buy heavier cast iron weights for the Gold's Gym Adjustable Cast 40 Lbs. Dumbbell Set.
After reading the reviews I purchased this dumbbell set and I'm happy I did. 3 weeks later, here's my review. Sure it does smell a little, but if it bothers you that much get some gloves. Plus the smell wears off after some time. The grips are fine and tighten up the weight are simple. They do loosen up a little like any pair dumbbells. The weights are ok for curls and shoulder lifts, but not enough for the chest. So I purchase more weights and now things are much better. Now I put 3 plates on each side, like two 10s and a 5, or three 10s. I think I can get 3 plates on there, but I haven't had the need yet. The weights they come with are solid and smooth. So I have no negative things about them. I am just happy to incorporate dumbbells into my workout instead of just using those darn bowflex power rods.
I am very satisfied with my Gold's Gym Dumbbell set. It arrived (at the store -- I opted for in-store pickup) well packed, and fetching it from the order counter was no problem. Unpacking at home was easy. Some have complained of an odor and/or oil skim on the surface -- nothing like this was noticeable. Changing the weights is easy. While this may not hack it in service in a health club, for home use I am pleased with these. I got them primarily because of the "Gold's Gym" brand. Their stuff just seems to work better than the no-brand stuff that may be a couple of dollars less expensive. I have a 65cm exercise ball, resistance tube kit, and an exercise floor mat, all from Gold's Gym (and Walmart). And I'm pleased with the performance of all these products.
