Yes you must work the hinge to get it so you can open it with one hand. The locking portion is really stiff. You won't close this with one hand fast. Thats good. I call the design a skeleton style. When you slide it open. A portion of the frame of the knife locks in to keep the blade open. In effect you get the feel of a non-folding knife when open. Because the frame is holding it open. Now closing is hard. That is good. Other folding knives put a thin piece of metal to hold the blade open. Making for easy closer. Not on this knife. It is designed to stay open and solid without wouble. You feel that as you handle it in an open position. The way the handle is designed makes you hold it in a basic self defense position. You will notice your hand fall into it in that fashion. The blade comes sharp. Before use I recommend a few times up and down on a finishing wet stone. You want to finish the blade. The edge is well defined. You won't have trouble doing this. I use gun oil to protect the metal. Since there is a dark coat on it you might not. I still like the blade to repel liquid for easy wipe off. Also that oil will protect the edge. The non-high gloss of the blade and body makes it look nice. If you always have a knife on you. If you think a knife is for more than opening things. You found your knife. Strong and ready when you need it to be. Last knife I had lasted about 6 months. The center screw stripped out. The blade was still perfect. This knife I don't see the center stripping out in the same way. Remember it will be hard to open at first. Remember I feel it will always be hard to close. That is a quality of the knives strength and rigid frame design.

Not worth the money
The blade isnt as sharp as everybody esle seems to think. The worst is the release to close the blade. It's extremely had to find and you have to push to close the blade. It took me a while to even find it. It's really small in the frame and you have to push it in. It's very hard to do with one hand. The knife isnt worth $12.00. I have knives that the release is easy to see and cost a lot less money. Get another knife and save $12.00.

Great Knife

I just got this knife a couple of days ago. This knife is very sharp straight out of the package. So far i am very impressed with it. I would pay more for this knife than what its priced at. Overall a very good knife to have. I would personally like the blade to be a little looser to open it better but thats my opinion

Can't get a better knife for this price.

I have had this knife for about 6 months now. I think this is one of the best knives I've owned, but think new owners need to be forwarned. A couple other people had some issues that I understand where they were coming from. They include that its function is very stiff at first and another was that it wasn't sharp when they received it. First - it is stiff when new. It is difficult to open one-handed, at first. Oil alone won't do it, you have to work - open/close, open/close. I almost became Quigly-like working it in my hand like I was working ball bearings during a trial. However, by taking the time to do that, I was rewarded with a knife I can easily open one-handed, but isn't loose. It has retained its solid build quality while functioning exactly the way I hoped. Second - I don't use any knife until I've put it on a wet stone. I got my stone and honed the edge before I ever used it. Of course I got it quite sharp. The true test for me is "how long does it keep its edge"? Again, I have been rewarded by correctly sharpening this knife and not seeing any need to do it again after several months of regular use (not mis-use). Pretty good for non-US steel. Overall I have been very heppy with this knife, but it does require a "little love" when you first get it.

Great Every Day Carry Tool!

Excellent EDC Tool! Purchased for around $15 at my local Walmart. I got the Silver colored one. It feels really sturdy, no loose or jiggly blade to handle connection, the lock mechanism seems strong. The Steel seems really good, the blade came extra sharp like a razor blade and it is very light weight! Great Pocket knife for pretty much anything, can't complain, the price was great! Fiskar corporation owns the Gerber name. Best EDC knife for the $$$.

Simply a great knife

Great knife, made rock solid from good steel. A lot of people are complaining about it being hard to open and close. Actually that's a good sign of a quality made assisted opening knife. With regular use,it will become super ex to open and close. The steel is heat treated good, and is 7cro17m I believe...which is a steel that sharpens easily, but needs touched up from time to time. Which is no problem. I've had a paraframe for years, and live in the country on a farm and it seems work and a ton of it. It performs great! Sure you could spend tons more on a knife, but why would you? It cuts and does it well.

1. Hello, The Gerber Paraframe is not considered a switchblade or an assisted-opening knife. It can be deployed with one hand by manually pushing the thumb-stud with your thumb until it locks in place. Sincerely, Gerber Gear

1. Hello, We changed our logo back in 2011. However, there are a number of products still out there that still contain the old logo. While the logos may be different, the product is still the exact same.
