Freaky Friday Soundtrack

Want to get ahead of the curve with "who's next" on the teen rock scene? Check out the soundtrack to the Disney re-make of Freaky Friday.

It includes rising stars such as The Donnas, Simple Plan, American Hi-Fi and Andrew W.K., along with the latest batch of hopeful young guitar bands just making their big-time debuts: Lillix, Forty Foot Echo, Halo Friendlies, Christina Vidal, Ashlee Simpson and Diffuser.

There's also some music directly from the film itself, including a performance by Jamie Lee Curtis' co-star, Lindsay Lohan (whose character has a high school rock band), and an orchestral piece from the original score by Rolfe Kent.

In all, the CD's sixteen tracks hover around that pop-song standard of perfection: three minutes. So the disc chugs along from one melodic, noisy radio-ready gem to the next, until the disc's near fifty minutes is up.

The disc is most easily divided not only between newly established acts and talented unknowns, but also by whether or not the songs are new originals or covers of old hits -- which is a nod to the film's theme of cross-generation pollinization.

For example, fresh-faced pop-punk heroes, Simple Plan offers up a thrashy yet earnest rendition of "Happy Together," a smash hit for The Turtles in the baby boom heyday of 1967. In another example, Canadian all-girl teen act, Lillix covers the 1981 anthem, "What I Like About You," by Detroit power pop heroes, The Romantics, whose well-worn vinyl would likely be found in her mother's old record collection.

Non-covers come from American Hi-Fi with their incendiary "The Art of Losing," and Forty Foot Echo with "Brand New Day." The debuting Canadian act has that wistful, reflective quality that seems to complement and accentuate film narrative so well (think music from WB network shows).

Also, The Halo Friendlies, an all-girl punk-pop act from Long Beach really rip it up with their song, "Me Vs. the World." The lead singer sounds a lot like Juliana Hatfield -- that is, cute as a button even as the guitars growl and soar. A video was made of the song, and these rockers are on the verge of stardom.

The soundtrack also serves as the debut of Ashlee Simpson, Jessica's little sister. Currently an MTV VJ and an actress on the WB show, "7th Heaven," her major label debut is forthcoming. On "Just Let Me Cry," Ashlee sounds like Gwen Stefani from No Doubt, and between her radio-friendly vocals and the song's funky synths, and Andy Summers-style reggae guitar work, "Just Let Me Cry" sounds like a hit.

The disc finishes with an orchestral passage, from the movie's original score called "Fortune Cookie," that might inspire wanna-be teen rockers to stick with their violin lessons.
