Forsaken Dreams is a really good book. If you like action, adventure, and romance, this book is for you. The characters were awesome, although there were a few I wanted to smack. That is true of any book though, some characters you love and others you just want to smack. This book hooked me from the beginning, and I highly recommend it. I can't wait for book #2 Elusive Hope to come out.

A land where dreams come true. That is what is promised in the first book of the Escape To Paradise series from MaryLu Tyndall. Forsaken Dreams is a fine telling of how there are always consequences to our actions whether they be good or bad. After the destruction of the Civil War a group of war ravaged people set sail to Brazil, the land of new opportunities, but secrets and a supernatural power wrap each person in a grip that threatens to crush them before they reach their promised Utopia. Eliza Crawford is a woman who knows what it is to regret a decision and when she sails on the New Hope she is hoping to leave behind the consequences of her actions and start anew. But secrets have a way of becoming known no matter how hard she tries to conceal them. Blake Wallace knows what real loss is. After the Civil War stripped him of all he held dear he is determined to build a new life away from the dangers and memories that surround him. As his feelings for Eliza develop he finds his dreams taking on a new form. The relationships among the characters felt real to life. From the feelings of betrayal to the longing for love even when one feels forsaken, the emotions will ring true for many people. I really liked Eliza's character because she was strong without being annoying and I could understand her wanting to be loved and accepted for who she was, and not attacked for the mistakes she made in her past. The cover is what first drew my interest, the misty mountain tells a story all its own and the cover does indeed match the story. I love how the author can make one feel like they are sailing on the ship, hoisting sails, manning the guns. She paints such descriptive pictures that even people who are not well versed in nautical terms can understand and envision what is happening. All of MaryLu Tyndall’s stories are filled with historical gems and Forsaken Dreams is a fine addition. MaryLu Tyndall has done a fantastic job, perhaps one of the best I’ve read, answering the question that so many people ask: Why didn’t God save us? The answer is a powerful one. A story well worth reading.

Eliza Crawford is such an independent character she cracks me up. Yet she is compassionate, loving, and full of forgiveness, someone that would be a great friend to have. With a past she wants to hide, and no where else to go she joins a crew of southern advocates who are trying to rebuild their lives after the devastation caused from the civil war. Colonel Blake Wallace is heading the expedition to Brazil. Not only to escape from the Yankees, he is hoping to rebuild his life as well. He is a very attractive gentlemen that commands respect just by his presence and Eliza falls hard for his friendship and attention, knowing that she could never have a relationship with him. Yet her heart disagrees strongly. What a love story! Whew! The ups and downs of this relationship made my heart race. I couldn’t wait to find out if forgiveness or pride will prevail. Every member on board the ship, New Hope, has experienced hardships beyond imagination. They each have a story of their own and a past to overcome. The reader gets a glimpse into some of their stories, and a teaser of others’ histories. The people who have found peace in the Lord and learned to forgive through His grace bring such encouragement to the few on the ship who are ready to listen. I was so emotionally attached to this book that when I had to put it down, if it was a sad part, I found myself in a depressed mood and had a difficult time pulling out of it. But if it was a victorious part of the story, I was excited and energized during my necessary break from the book. MaryLu, the author, is amazing in the way she skillfully brings her characters to life and their emotions are so real. The spiritual world is alive and strong on the ship and once they reach Brazil and the way MaryLu presents it is beautiful and nerve-racking as there is both good and evil. I wish I had several copies to hand out to friends and relatives. I can’t wait for her sequel. The historical research she had to do for this novel is significant. Plus she is able to keep true to their speech patterns and graces of that time period. I am truly enthralled with her talents.
