About this item

This “electrifying debut” (Los Angeles Times) arms women of color with the tools and knowledge they need to find success on their own terms

For generations, Brown girls have had to push against powerful forces of sexism, racism, and classism, often feeling alone in the struggle. By founding Latina Rebels, Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez has created a community to help women fight together. In For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts, she offers wisdom and a liberating path forward for all women of color. She crafts powerful ways to address the challenges Brown girls face, from imposter syndrome to colorism. She empowers women to decolonize their worldview, and defy “universal” white narratives, by telling their own stories. Her book guides women of color toward a sense of pride and sisterhood and offers essential tools to energize a movement.

May it spark a fire within you.

Time wasted, hate and divison inducing propaganda.

I purchased this book in hopes of reading it to gain insight on many topics that the author champions. After reading it, I understand the twisted logic on how perception of one person can easily find faults or sources to blame for anything that ails you. The book jumps to conclusions that are far from truth for every person in every situation but painds broad strokes in order to prove a theory. There is a lot of emotion in the book and rightfully so but it simplicizes concepts with many complex variables to derive from and instead lumps things into neatly crafted categories. Subjects like Toxic Masculinity and the Male Gaze strike me as particularly disturbing as a person of color and a person of the LGBTQ community I do not agree with the authors take because I see through a different lens of how people act and react not based soley on what I was born with in my DNA but rather the culmination of nature and nurture in my lifes experiences. Not all of my experiences with Men in my life were good but I do not paint them as some kind of boogeyman to fear and be repulsed by. There are great men and women out there that dont conform to gender roles or treat people differently based off of skin or gender. I feel like the author is prejudiced based on what she has gone through in her life however results may vary. I do not see people from the outside inward. My interactions across the world and in my own communities have differed drastically than hers however I am always looking for the positive in everyone so that could be the difference in how I perceive things. Looking for commonality and similarities between people of all walks of life means I have never met a stranger just future friends of who I have yet to become familiar with. My childhood and adulthood trauma are not because of abstract concepts but rather stem from meeting bad individuals who do not represent a race sex or population as a whole. This way of thinking is racist, sexist, prejudicial and harmful for bridging the gaps between the multitude of people who live on this planet. Not all people are bad and actively painting people into sub categories has always divided and not brought people together. I cannot recommend this book as it is highly devisive and denotes everything wrong with how people treat each other. This kind of subversive literature just pushes people further into the fringes instead of healing any racial or sexual tensions between people. I have read and owned thousands of books and like to pass books to others so I can share the gift of knowledge. I have read books I dont agree with but it is good to see different points of view so i can "literally walk a mile in another persons shoes". This book is the first book I am actually not going to donate or return or sell. This will be the very first book I actually destroy and remove from circulation because it serves only to divide and hate. I do not recommend anyone to read such drivel and hope its insanity doesnt spread!
