This book largely reads like a fictional story book, which is fine if one were to use it in, perhaps, an elementary classroom. From the writing style to the art, this casual retelling of the story of Florence Nightingale and her influence on modern medicine is an enjoyable yet simplistic. I was not a big fan of the art, though I can see the appeal of the stylized and colorful images. I cannot see a practical application for this book in my own classrooms, but I would likely recommend it to an Elementary social studies teacher to include in their library.
About This Item
Florence Nightingale revolutionized the world of medicine by emphasizing cleanliness, food that was hot and nutritious, and organization in hospitals. What began as an attempt to make army hospitals safer and more effective became a lifelong mission, and remains relevant today.
This new picture book biography of Florence Nightingale, from celebrated author and artist Demi, beautifully portrays the story of Florence's life and explores the long-lasting effects of her career.
