Learn how to operate an oil lamp before buying
10/1/2015

I read several of the reviews here and most struck me as people who have never used an oil lamp before. I have been using them and Coleman white gas lanterns since I was a kid. I prefer the oil lamp over the Coleman because, once it is set up, it is much more simple than a Coleman (ask anyone who has had to change a mantle as it is getting dark). First things is oil lamps must be kept totally upright or you will have leaks. You can't tie them to a tree or let them swing on a hook. By design they are open just under the wick so the wick can contact the oil and be moved. About moving the wick. First, you need to trim new wicks to match the curve of the opening they are in. Second, you put it up to light, then turn it down low enough to provide the wanted brightness while avoiding creating too much soot. If your glass is getting black, you need to turn down the wick. After you figure out the best wick level for your lamp, using it is simple as fill, light and turn the wick down. No pumping, no batteries, no mantles, no expensive white gas (oil is cheap). To shut it off, just turn the wick down all the way. That's it. Wicks do not need to be frequently changed, especially if you are using them for emergencies or camping. Worst drawback on an oil lamp is you need to keep it totally upright or drain it for storage.

A lantern that works!

Great bang for the buck. I have 3 of these and will be buying more. I have used it for camping and for emergency light in power outages. Compared to a flashlight or candle it is well worth its price. The lamp oil is cheap and the wick adjuster worked fine for me on all my lamps. Yes, if you overfill it, there will be overspill. Also unless you are super careful when filling you will get some overspill, but that is the nature of this type of lamp. All in all it is a good lamp. I think the people who disliked this product had way too high of expectations for a product that costs only around $5. If I had spent say $20 or $40 like a major name brand oil lamp, I might have expected some more bells and whistles.

Doesn't work, cheap, terrible product !!

Even for a WalMart product, this lantern was cheaply made. It should be thought of as a disposible, one-time use item at best. The mechanism to raise and lower the wick did not work. The materials were made of very cheap metal...tin, thin aluminum?...and the lever on the side to raise/lower the chimney to extinguish the flame did not work! I had a terrible time getting the flame to go out. WalMart has set a new low even carrying this product.

Poor Quality - Nice Idea

If it didn't leak flammable oil and if the wick adjuster worked at all this would have been a nice lamp and a useful emergency light. Unfortunately the quality is very poor. Its going back for a refund.

Great small kerosene lantern to compliment our large kerosene lantern. Be ready for that next big storm and the lights go out.
