The blade on this Farberware 5" Ceramic Utility Knife is stronger than steel and also more brittle. Ceramic lasts longer than traditional blades, retaining a very sharp cutting edge for years I hear. The ergonomic handle offers a soft, secure and comfortable grip. A protective sheath for storage keeps the Farberware knife safe between uses. This extremely durable cutting tool is easy to keep clean and will remain rust free. Keep it in the kitchen to take on meal prep tasks from chopping and mincing fruits and vegetables to slicing meats and bread. Take it camping to process fish and much more. The only thing I have found it doesn't do well is slice celery. This Farberware 5" ceramic utility knife, retains a sharp cutting edge, it's stronger and sharper than traditional stainless steel blades the ergonomic handle offers a comfortable grip the 5" knife includes blade cover makes for safe, secure storage, hand wash only, keep in mind it's rust-resistant. If you have seen the demonstration on TV of cutting tomatoes, this knife does that and as thin a slice as a person would need.

I have seen these knives many times but never had the opportunity to get one. I'm so glad I got to try it through Spark Reviewer Program. I love this knife. First I tried it cutting soft foods, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, cheese, etc. And it sliced through them like they weren't even there. Then I tried it on raw vegetables, carrots, potatoes, broccoli, again sliced right through them with no trouble at all. Then I tried it on meats, both raw and cooked. I'm amazed how easily and quickly it cuts through them. Like no other knife I own. I was worried the light color of it may stain, but I have used it on a daily basis and no staining. It goes through the dishwasher just fine. I made the mistake of cutting some things just on my counter and it cut a slit in the counter top. Now I make sure to use my cutting board every time. I would like to caution people that when they use this knife, it is VERY sharp. One slip and you have a nasty cut. I can't tell yet how long it will keep it's sharp edge, but I hope it's a long time. I plan on buying more in different sizes so that I will have a complete set. I love it! I also love the fact that it has a blade cover. Saves on accidental cuts when reaching in the knife drawer.

Sharp, easy to handle, durable and well made. With very little effort it easily cut through a spaghetti squash and sliced carrots like they were butter. I used it to cut berries and have found that if I don't rinse the knife off right away it will tend to stain. The stains do go away after a couple of uses and washing's. It comes with a great blade cover for storing the knife. The 5-inch size is really versatile for doing all kinds of different slicing and cutting jobs. It will be very useful for most foods but the blade is not suitable for filleting meat, fish or poultry. For filleting you need a thinner bladed knife. I don’t think it can be sharpened at home like metal blades can. Ceramic blades seem much sharper than regular blades however they are also more fragile. The package says don’t try cutting anything to hard or using it to pry anything or you'll chip the blade. I use the blade cover so it doesn't accidentally get chipped in your drawer. I wish I would have found these sooner....I’m going to get them for Christmas gifts this year I think my friends and family will like them too. This knife is quickly becoming the only knife I use. The Pros - Doesn't rust, holds its edge 10x as long as a metal blade, It’s lighter and sharper than stainless, and is dish washer safe. The Cons – It’s more sensitive to chipping if dropped.

I had been curious about ceramic knives, after hearing so much about them on television. This was my opportunity to try one for myself. Initially, it looks rather ominous due to having its own sheath. That alone makes you wary regarding its sharpness. I was very tentative about handling it while washing the knife prior to my first use. The handle is remarkably comfortable in the hand. The knife is light weight and has no bulk to it. I have some arthritis in my hand due to a career of repetitive computer related activities. However, this knife handle eliminated any concern about using it safely and effectively. My first use was to chop vegetables for salad. The knife cuts every item with extremely smooth precision. The edge is not serrated, but it cuts tomatoes like they are soft butter. The more coarse vegetables were able to be easily cut with extraordinarily little pressure. Although I generally use a 4” serrated paring knife for utility work, this ceramic knife will easily become my preferred utensil. I will be on the look-out for a 4” version of this knife. It will be very handy to have in the drawer also. I have a knife block on my kitchen counter with a complete set of impressive knives, but I think ceramic knives may become my favorites.

This review is for the Farberware 5” Ceramic Utility Knife. I have never used nor have I owned a ceramic knife before receiving this one. I have always wanted to try a ceramic knife. I have heard how sharp they are and how well they keep their edge. Finally, I am able to see if all the hype is true. Wow! I wish I would have gotten a ceramic knife way before now. I have missed out on a lot of advantages. This knife is incredibly sharp, feels very nice in my hand, is well balanced and is a good size for doing practically any job in the kitchen and has a nice blade cover.. My first opportunity to try the knife was preparing dinner – fried chicken. The knife cut through meat, fat and cartilage like a hot knife through butter. I am impressed. I tried it next on cutting carrots. Amazing! I felt like a professional chef whizzing through this task. I am now a true believer in the qualities of ceramic knives. No more metal knives for me! The insert does state that these are not to be used on hard cheeses or for chopping or cutting frozen foods. They are also not to be used for prying. It is possible for the ceramic to chip. They are also to be used only on plastic or wood cutting boards only. Any good knife should only be used on wood or plastic so no problem for me there.

I used my new knife and it seemed that it dulled while using my glass cutting board . It is not good for sweet potatoes , had to get out the old stainless steel knife .

    • A. I use a wooden cutting board, but my sister uses both marble and plastic boards...so those three are definitely good. I would think that if it works well on marble, glass should not be a problem.

    • A. It is recommended that a plastic cutting board be used. Glass or hard materials will dull the edge much faster.

    • A. I believe they say in the owner's instruction sheet, that glass, or marble cutting boards are not recommended. I use a good wood cutting board. I like maple, but any good wood board should be OK.

    • A. I used the knife on a polyurethane board and I had no issues with it getting dull at all. I didn't try to use it for peeling, as I use a peeler, but it was top notch for cutting and slicing.
