After a lifetime of chasing women, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell in love. Unfortunately for Michael, Francesca's surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer, the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin.

I love this book!!! It's different than a lot of books out there in a lot of ways. First, Michael is Francesca's best friend - not some man she saw and fell madly in love with. Secondly, it's Michael who's pining, which seems against the grain - and I'm very glad because I'm tired of it always being the girl's job to pine. Thirdly, it's the first book I've read where the hero suffers from malaria for a significant portion of the book. Fourthly, it's one of the few books I've read where the widow actually truly loved her husband before he died. Fifthly, this book begins very sadly, and a touch of that sadness continues through the rest of the book. Despite that, this book is amazingly good. Very touching, and sweet, and really everything a romance novel should be expected to be. Michael, while prickly and tortured, is completely lovable - although far from perfect - and Francesca struggles to come to terms with her husband's death and her growing feelings for his cousin and her best friend. Truly charming!!!

I love Julia Quinn's books. I really do but Francesca and Michael's story was just downright boring. I couldn't care a farthing about them. Also, I found the timeline in this book a bit off and I also felt some of the events were put together for convenience sake. Whatever it is, I just hope my next attempt to read it's in his kiss would be better.

The first part of this...

The first part of this book is really very, very sad. Francesca and John seem to be so very in touch with each other. They are so very much in love. It is heartbreaking that they are only together for two years. I am not sure who took John's death hardest Francesca or Michael. Francesca had only know John for two years and though she loved him very much it is such a short time. However, Michael had grown up with John and they were closer than brothers. It didn't help that Michael also loved Francesca and therefore thought that he in some way wished that John would die so he could have a chance at marrying Francesca. It was a terrible mess complicated by Francesca's miscarriage. I also don't think that John run away to India was the best thing but it gave John time to come to terms with John's death and grow into the rule of earl. I also think that it gave Francesca a chance to mourn John and realize that she needs to find a husband and get on with her life. I do find it interesting and intriguing that the three stories: Romancing Mr Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip with Love and When He was Wicked all take place within the same time frame. John fights so hard to keep from showing anyone how much he loves and wants Francesca. I thought it was funny that Colin was able to see when no one else seemed to notice. John has been fooling people for so long that it is second nature to him. He is a caring, compassionate man that needed a direction for his life. Having fought in the Peninsula War he is at lose ends at the beginning of the story. Francesca is straightforward and intelligent. She ran Kilmartin for four years by herself in an age when so many woman wouldn't have been able to add up the number in the household accounts. She is strong and capable. However she is lonely in the extreme. I understand that she wants companionship but she is over looking the one person that would love her deeper and more fully than I think even John did. There are times in this story that I would like to take both Michael and Francesca and shake them hard. These two are so afraid of the something, I am not sure either of them knows what they are afraid of but they are afraid. I am glad though that they finally worked everything out and realized that they loved each other. As with all of Ms. Quinn's books that are a number of funny spots that have left me laughing or grinning widely. I think that is one of her greatest strengths. The other is that she draws you into her world and shows you the lives of these people. Her characters are far from perfect. They argue and cry and laugh. They have overcome tragedy and grief. They are strong and capable. I will be sad to see the series come to an end.

Finally, a Francesca i...

Finally, a Francesca in a romance novel that isn't evil, or someone's hidden mistress! And this breaks all convention, starting with the heroine very happily married to someone. I kept on thinking of Love Actually, with the poor lad in love with Keira Knightly - by the end of the book, I half believed I looked like Keira Knightly. Now that's some suspension of disbelief!

The sixth book in the ...

The sixth book in the Bridgerton series explores the relationship between Francesca Bridgerton and John & Michael Sterling. Francesca meets Michael Sterling 2 days before she marries his best friend and cousin, John Sterling and for 2 years Michael hides his feelings for Francesca. One day John complains of a headache and lies down for a nap only to die of what is likely a brain hemorrhage at the age of 32. So, at 22 Francesca is a widow and Michael is now the Earl. Michael still attempts to hide his feelings from Francesca as they both mourn their loss. One night Michael offers simple solace to Francesca and this turns into heated lovemaking that leaves them both feeling guilty. They avoid one another to prevent a repeat performance, but Francesca begins to wonder if John is arranging things from heaven. This wonderful book follows the lives of three friends who survive the loss of one, the subsequent mourning and deeper relationship of the two who remain. Again, a winner, as Julia Quinn deals delicately with both the loss of a young life, the miscarriage of a baby and chronic illness. A great addition to the Bridgerton series.
