Ms. Chow writes a story about life in California in the 1880's with a Chinese persective of an first generation Chineses immigrant. Many immigrants experienced such conditions and situations. The author writes about ancestral worship, family piety and expectations that are still present today. A very well writen book by Ms. Chow. The length of the book was not too short like many I have read lately. The character development of Willow shows through to a strong woman. Willow learns that not everything is black and white and learning that Life has shades of gray. Any decisions made will eventually affect herself and her daughter Jas. Her relationship to her daughter goes through some growing pains as well. Willow's actions effects her daughter but you always know she loves her girl. A poignant story of a mother's love to her daughter from beyond.
