I used the downy ball once and it did not open during the cycle at all. When I took it out to empty it before trying again, the plug came apart completely and 3 pieces fell out.

I don't like using dryer sheets but had to do something because the static on my clothes is out of control. Having to remember to get the rinse cycle for liquid softener is a pain, so this really helps. I just bought mine & have run three loads with it, very happy. Wish it was cheaper or given away free with a bottle of softener or something.

I remember using the Downy Ball years ago. I loved it. My recent washers have all had auto dispensers which I also love. I recently moved into an apartment. The washer doesn't have an auto dispenser. I thought, "No big deal, I'll go buy a Downy Ball." I ended up buying it online because none of the five stores I visited actually had any. Either way, I was very happy to receive my Downy Ball in the mail. This new ball either doesn't open or doesn't empty. I've tried different sized loads. I'm not using the gentle cycle. It happens regardless of what I am washing (i.e. jeans, towels, t-shirts and socks, work clothes). It is only a month old so I know it isn't worn or clogged. In their effort to save money, boost production, reduce waste, become more green ... whatever the reason ... what did Downy change that makes the Downy Ball no longer work? Please change it back. Thanks, Stacy p.s. Yes, I'd recommend it if they change it back to one that works. :)

Wonderful! I remember having one years ago. I know it will save on my water bill too. Got one for my daughter and she really likes it too.

  • A. It has a ring in the middle that you pull. There is a flexible part of the plug that comes partially out so you can fill it. Don't fill it past the line though or you will be wasting product.

  • A. Centrifugal force at the end of the wash cycle pushes the plunger down. When the rinse cycle starts the heavy plunger and the open top hold it down and fill it up. As more water pours in for the rinse cycle it dilutes the softener further and as the washer agitates it mixes thoroughly with clothes. The last spin cycle removes the excess. And Voila.

  • A. Hi Rog, Thank you for your interest in the Downy Ball! The ball floats on top of the water among the clothes in the wash cycle. When the machine is in the spin cycle, the centripetal force of the spin cycle will cause the valve to open. The ball will then drop down into the bottom of the washer, where it will fill with water as the machine fills for the rinse cycle and Downy will be dispensed into the rinse water. I hope this helps, Adam
