Going back in time to save the one you love? Wait, wasn't that the plot to "Father's Day", season one of the reboot? True, Rose and 9 didn't have to deal with Weeping Angels, and we'd all miss Amy and Rory. Still...the similarities between that episode and this book leave me to mark this book down a star. The author did a bang-up job of keeping 11, Amy, and Rory in character. He also managed to make the original characters interesting, the character development poignant and believable, and hooked the reader. Though this book was intended for a younger audience, one did not feel as though the author spoke down. (Though because of the way the book was written, I read through it very quickly). This book makes me miss Amy and Rory...and onward ho to the next book on my to read list!

This weeks throwback ...

This week's throwback review is for Doctor Who: Touched By an Angel by Jonathan Morris. It was released March 6, 2014 by BBC Books as the Monster Collection Edition. It features the Eleventh Doctor as played by Matt Smith as well as his companions Amy Pond and Rory. Mark Whitaker receives an envelope 8 years after his wife Rebecca died in a car accident. It's addressed in his own writing, yet he has no recall of having written it. Inside is a note including the simple message, "You can save her." The angels transport Mark back in time to before his wife died. He is anxious to make changes to the timeline, but doing so would mess up his future self and probably cause some paradox. The paradox would feed the Angels. While Mark wants to save Rebecca, The Doctor and his companions are trying to save him and the world from the Weeping Angels. The plot centers around Mark Whitaker with little involvement from the Doctor and his companions. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory mostly do brief stints of time travel appearing at key points in Mark's timeline as outlined in the letter, to thwart the angels. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory act true to their characters. I especially enjoyed the Doctor. He is a little more fleshed out than Amy and Rory. The plot is fast paced leaping from one point on the timeline to the next with little downtime for the characters in the telling. The book still manages to tell how Mark manages to survive in his past. Overall it's a good book. The characters are true to form. It would enhance your experience if you are familiar with this cast of the Eleventh Doctor. I still give the book 4 stars for the portrayal of all including the Angels and for the action. Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I always love reading these Doctor Who books, and this one was no exception. The Weeping Angels are some of my favorite monsters. This story was very interesting and fast-paced. I enjoyed getting to know Mark, the poor guy the angels are after. My heart went out to him, and the book didn't end as I was expecting. I do wish it had been narrated by Matt Smith (I love the ones narrated by David Tennant), but the narrator still does an excellent job. You could definitely tell which character was supposed to be speaking.

With just some timey wimey loose ends, it is a funny and emotional book with a genuine whovian touch.

Mark has never gotten ...

Mark has never gotten over the loss of his wife, Rebecca, in a car accident in 2003. Shortly after a chance encounter with The Doctor, Amy, and Rory in 2011, Mark finds himself zapped seventeen years into his past by a Weeping Angel. The Doctor is completely baffled why the Weeping Angels have changed their usual habits and sent Mark back within his own lifetime. What he doesn't know is that just before Mark was sent into the past, he received a letter from his future self telling him that if he follows every step in the letter, he can save his wife from dying. Obviously this one isn't going to have much appeal for those outside of the Doctor Who fandom, but for those of us who label themselves Whovians, there's plenty to enjoy. While Morris' characterizations aren't perfect, there are some lovely character moments for Mark as he observes his own past from the outside and deals with the grief over the loss of his wife. Morris also does some interesting things with the Weeping Angels that will intrigue fans of this particular Doctor Who villain. If it strikes your fancy, I suggest picking it up (presuming that you've watched at least through the end of season 5 of new Who).
