Good, but could be better

Customer review by Nordtorp

This is my third Latitude over a 10-12 year period. My reason for changing was a slowly dimming screen and an increasingly erratic behavior of my D620, and a desire to move to Win7. It was not an easy switch as it did not seem that the new models were as good or better than the old one. While the E6420 functions fine its construction is somewhat disappointing. Pros: Stays cool enough that you can actually sit with it on your lap. Great screen with good resolution. Back-lit keyboard. Reasonably fast. Hinges way better than on the D620. Good battery life for its size (up to 4 hours with light use on standard battery). Nice feel of the keyboard. Nice mouse pad and quiet mouse buttons. Cons: The frame is not nearly as good as the D620. The deck on the right side over the DVD drive door keeps popping up. The frame and scree bezel are way too large. You should be able to fit a 15" screen in the same frame. Sound quality good but volume could be higher; it's hard for two people to watch a movie and listen to the built-in speakers.

Do not buy

I created an account just to submit this review. I would rank the E6420 as a do not buy. I had a D630 and after a week I returned the E6420 and went back to my old machine. - trackpad can't handle double finger scroll gesture. takes a few lines to figure out if you're scrolling - wider, taller, deeper and I believe, heavier, than the laptop I was replacing, a D630 - screen resolution is worse, 1368x768 vs. 1440x900. This is the biggest reason I sent the laptop back. Losing that much real estate makes a preview pane almost useless. I'll admit I should have read the specs more carefully but I thought it would be similar, if not better, than a 4 year old laptop. It's clearly a 14" screen in a 15" chassis, adding to the small screen feel. - minor, but loss of the right mouse click button from the keyboard, more loss of functionality. Only benefits are better hinges for the screen and a fingerprint reader. Such a downgrade when compared to the older products, hopefully this line sees some changes soon and Dell stops shifting towards shorter/wider screens.

Defective Adapter, great notebook

Customer review by Serene1

The notebook is great. Expensive, but worth it, because I use it for 3d art, and not only is it fast, but it is quiet, and has a great screen. I don't like the adapter though. Mine is defective. If it is touched, or moved, it will kill the power to my notebook, making it useless. It is sitting in my lap right now as I write the review, because if it hangs out the back of my notebook, chances are it will be bumped. Fortunately, it seems just a problem with the ace adapter, because if I tighten the cord where it connects to the adapter, it powers back on again. The ac adapter is clearly defective, and not only that, it is monstrously large! Easily twice the size of my standard notebook adapter. I guess I will have to call customer service and arrange for a return of the power adapter, but it is a bummer to have to do that... I've only had it two week.s

Bigger than E6410 in every category

Why is there so much extra space on the sides of the keyboard? Why is there so much extra space surrounding the screen? The screen could have easily been made bigger.

This laptop replaced my 3 year old Lenovo T500, which was a great machine and is still going strong. I spent a lot of time researching across all of the brads looking for a machine to suit my needs; small, lightweight & robust(I travel a lot and commute on a Motorbike), powerful, good screen resolution(1366x768 display is not that useful in the real world) & docking ability. Yes, I wanted it all. As the IS Manager I could have bought any laptop I wanted and after much research went for the highest spec E6420; 1 x i7-2640M, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 1600x900 display and NVS 4200M Graphics. I have been using it for just over 3 months now and have not regretted my decision in any way. The SSD is fantastic with very quick boot times. The display is clear and bright and a good resolution for the size. Battery life is pretty good considering the performance. The Laptop feels very robust and well put together. Only cons are it could have been a little smaller for the display size and the touchpad buttons are a little "hit and miss" at times. I like it a lot and now recommend it as our default all round laptop for those looking for good performance in a robust travel ready package.

Lenono vs. Dell vs. HP

Own: HP Elitebook 8560p, Thinkpad Edge, Thinkpad L412, Dell D820, Lattitude E6420 Ransom Notes: Screen small for chassis size. (could have made screen much bigger) Keyboard layout is excellent (best layout of any brand). The delete key and cltr keys are in the right spots. The only brand with lighted keyboard. Big plus but not intuitive how to start it at first. Keyboard quality is nowhere as great as Thinkpads. In fact it feels really cheap. Hp Elitebook is the worst hardware and software design in history. Stay away at all costs. Don't really like the front cover latch. Needs two hands to open. Don't really like the rubberized keyboard area. The trackpoint & touchpad could be better quality. The software & driver update program is the worst part of the dell. It simply doesn't work. The speaker are useless. At maximum volume. U cannot hear it. The ports & plugs are a toss up. Still evaluating. Only brand that I can get a (8 thread 4 core)i7-2720qm in a 14"; that's not an HP. Conclution: If I could get a i7-2720qm in a 14", with a lighted keyboard, with dell's keyboard layout from lenovo, I would. But I can't, so Dell E6420 is my only choice.. Note stay away from HP at all costs..

I purchased a 6420 to replace a 3 year old latitude D630. Overall i have been quite disappointed and the E6420 does not fell like an upgrade at all. First off, the E6420 is larger-- 1" wider. I could have found this in the published dimensions but assumed that 14" latitudes would be about the same size. The trackpad is also larger so that when i first started using it i was constantly grazing it and moving the location of the cursor. VGA port is on the side, which makes my docking setup awkward. And the VGA port screw holes are too recessed-- neither my monitor or the projector i have access to have long enough screws to screw the VGA in. Overall, not happy and when this one is done i'm unlikely to replace it with another latitude.

Nice working computer

Starting using dell laptop long time ago, so easily switch to this new one easily. I would choose 4.5 star for this product, but failed to do so. It only accept 4 or 5 stars. So just you know, I am setting it 4.5 star while I have to choose 5. The sturdy design, and thanks for 3 usb port on the right, make me easy to connect all kinds of necessary items when working. Nice resolution, I bought 1600*900 one, and really good for open two windows in a row. (I am using fedora) And if you setup 4 working zone, 8 windows can be shown immediately. The only drawback is the spin noise of the harddisk. My disk was WD 250G 5400rpm one, I am going to replace it by Intel ssd later.

Mis-marketed - best to go with older models

To start, the Latitude E6420 is not a bad computer, functionally speaking. The problem lies in the poor design quality. To be very blunt, the materials used are much too cheap for the price. For example, simply resting my hands on the keyboard makes a very annoying "squeeking" sound caused by an inexpensively produced under-casing. Additionally, the laptop scratches and knicks much too easily, even with the recommended Dell neoprene case. I rarely complain about products however, it's disappointing to see how the Latitude has gone from a rugged business computer to a poor quality computer I'd recommend for teenagers.

Excellent in Performance - Disgusting in Design

I have recently purchased a latitude E6420 with an i7-2760QM Processor and 8GB memory. Once I opened the box, Its appearance disappointed me as if I should have never purchased this one. But It is quite fast if you are running a fairly computational intensive application. The Nvidia NVS 4200M Graphics card is pretty good in handling small 3D cubes. Though, display is 14" but the size of the laptop is pretty big and misleading. It is as big as a Sony laptop with 15.4" display. I never understood why Dell ditched a wonderful design as in the Dell Precision M2400. perhaps, I should have bough it last year.
