My previous laptop was a desktop replacement with an I7 950 processor. Being on the road an average of 60 days a year on active duty while being a fulltime on line student, I needed to find something more practical. I purchased an XPS 12 through AAFES 2 months ago with an I7 processor. The flexibility of this machine is astounding. I use in when in flight, in my office, on the exercise bike, just about anywhere. I have no issues using the touch screen in laptop mode as some have mentioned. I have even met with our IT department to look at these as replacements for the Dell laptops our recruiters currently use. If the government ever updates to Windows 8, they would be perfect if the can accommodate an internal CAC card reader. If you have never experienced windows 8 with a touch screen, then you have never experienced it. If you are looking for something that can run apps as well as full blown pc programs you can't go wrong with this machine.

I got this to replace a 6 month old Dell Inspiron 15z which I gave to my son when he went off to University. The XPS12 does look good and is solidly made, the problem is it is very buggy. Sometimes it fails to start from sleep, sometimes it boots fast (but no faster than the 15z) sometimes it just plays dead. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 the screen rotate is all over the place so you end up having to shake the darn thing to get the text facing the right way up ! The 12.5" screen is crystal clear but text/icons are very small, however, 8.1 has helped with this. I'd like to swap back to the 15z but my son loves the power, Nvidia gaming card, 32gb cache, etc so much that he doesn't want dads latest technology. I suspect the issue is not Dell's it is Microsoft. If they really want to compete with Apple and Android build an operating system that doesn't need 50 different drivers and doesn't need security updates every time you switch on.

I really like this machine. It is crazy fast, touchpad and keyboard work well and provide great tactile feedback, audio is clean with decent range and display is bright and high definition. And having both a laptop and a tablet in one device, with a well executed design, is a great convenience. The machine is also thin and light and easy to carry around. Boot times are typically less than 10 seconds and feel almost instantaneous. Touchpad is so reliable and predictable I rarely use a mouse. Device drivers are solid and all features are fast, stable and responsive. Not a lot of ports but this seems to be the norm with recent ultrabooks. There are plenty of inexpensive adaptors available for card readers, Ethernet and video. I do upon occasion notice mild image retention, as noted in some previous reviews, but only with grey backgrounds and only along the perimeter of the display. After 5 months it is still not a problem. This behavior is not limited to Dell products. Finally, customer service has been exceptional. Fast and responsive to my needs.

Ultra thin, ultra portable. Everything I needed for law school

I was searching for a nice 11-13 inch laptop for law school. My requirements included the size, the thinness, weight, an i5 processor, 2-in-1 capability, touch screen capability, and a decent design. All in all, I found very few that met all these criteria on the market. Initially, I opted for the Dell XPS 11, which was close to perfect, except that the keyboard was not practical for my use. Although the quality of videos on Youtube was exceptional, it was difficult to type efficiently on and slowed down my note-taking quality. I then saw the XPS 12 and noticed how it had a real physical keyboard and opted for this one - best decision ever. It has a unique 2-in-1 design that is unlike the common laptop/tablet, which sets it apart. The carbon fiber finish is beautiful and makes for a more lightweight 12-inch laptop, and it is still able to achieve a very thin design. Five stars for sure! If the video quality of this XPS12 were as impressive as the XPS11, it would literally be perfect. I can confidently say that this is the best laptop I can find that fulfills all the elements I was looking for.

This is my first time ordering a Dell product and definitely will be my last. I've ordered a Dell XPS 2-in-1 ultrabook and expected it to be of excellent quality, yet it comes with too many bugs and inconvenience. Bugs (Dell's fault): - You can't put this laptop to sleep after 15 minutes, that function doesn't work - The Wireless network disconnect every few hours (it's not my Wireless internet modem, since my PC's internet still works) - The screen randomly dims itself, then brightens itself randomly even when I'm actively using the laptop - The screen rotation doesn't work Inconvenience: - the laptop heats up if you use it on your lap - if you connect the power cable to your laptop while using it, it heats up really badly on the side that connects with the cable - the laptop's ventilation is poorly designed The amount of bugs that come with this laptop has caused me to believe that Dell does not ensure that this product is Quality Assured. I feel very angry about spending $1500 on this product that comes with too many bugs/errors and poorly designed features.

    The best laptop-first 2-in-1

With 2-in-1 devices you have two kinds: 1) Laptop-first (like this one) 2) Tablet-first If this is going to be your primary device, used for work or gaming, then laptop first is generally preferred due to its flexibility and ease of use. This device is the best laptop-first 2-in-1 because not only does it perform well but it also does what no other seems to have managed to do and it does it well. It allows you to turn you laptop into tablet mode without having the keyboard being face down on your lap or palm. This 2-in-1 laptop has also been made even better with the free upgrade to Windows 10. Windows 10 allows you to flip the screen from laptop mode into tablet mode and Windows automatically detects this and changes the Windows mode from pc to tablet mode, making it more touch friendly with ease. Windows 10 also makes it perform even better in general.

Great device with poor system/drivers? This is my second Dell XPS 12. At the beginning everything was perfect. Great design, fantastic screen, perfect finish. But after 2 months of using this device I started struggling with problems. First device was sent back to repair due to problems with network adapter and battery on sleep mode. After 2 repairs Dell decided to replace my previous device. And now same problems occurs with the new device. Every single time after sleep mode I have to disable and enable network device or restart system to connect to WiFi, I tried to use different drivers, roll back to the factory settings, nothing helps... Second very, very annoying thing is battery. Sometimes on the sleep mode battery can go down by dozen % within few hours... I use to have budget laptops which can handle days on battery during sleep mode. I use Windows 8.1 64 bits and very often I'm forcing with blue screen and other errors which cause restart. I don't have any sophisticated software which could cause such problems. What is more I noticed on several forums that other users forcing with the same problems

Bought the latest i7 model with the 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4500U processor, 256gb SSD and Win 8.1. I bought the last model with i7-3537U processor about 6 months ago and found it terrible with a whole lot of updates required when new and still very buggy. Unfortunately it was stolen. I was weighing what to get after my last experience with the XPS 12 but on reading recent reviews of the new model decided to bite the bullet with another XPS 12. I have not looked back since and now am glad that the last XPS 12 was pinched. Although it is a convertible I have only used it in laptop mode- makes a perfect ultrabook. The keyboard works brilliantly and the touchpad does not interrupt the use. I used the laptop installing apps that I use, browsing the web and emails continuously for 3.5 hours last night and there was still 3.5 hours of battery life left after that. My kids love the tablet form for their game apps. Windows 8.1 took a bit to get used to but now I like it better than Win 8. Only grudge is the noisy fan when the CPU is working at full speed when installing apps etc. Overall a great buy.
