The Greatest Coleman 8-Man Tent
I bought the identical 8-man tent about 3 or 4 years ago. It has never failed me. I have put up this tent all by myself; have taken it down by myself; and because the carrying case is larger than the industry's other tent bags, it is a pleasure to set up and put away. Another great feature: during multiple rain storms during the 3 or 4 summer camping seasons, I have never had a leak and the floor material is waterproof, just like what the advertisement says. I always place a thick tarp under this tent, being careful to fold whatever leftover tarp under the tent so that if it rains, the water will not "puddle" between the tarp floor and the tent floor. Today I ordered another tent via the store's website, simply because "Why buy another brand when the same product is the best!" I can now offer it to family and friends to borrow and still use my original one, when we go on camping trips together! I cannot wait to see if there are any improvements to this 8-man tent, not that it needed any! I am very happy to give this recommendation.

Tent snaped in half (X4)
The Good Stuff: Set up time is not bad for this tent 25 minutes with two people helping. It is big enough for two full size and one twin bed with gear. The price was good (well had it lasted more then 6 hours!) The Bad Stuff: About 6 hours after we got the tent set up (for the first and only time) it began to rain. We kept checking the seams and everything was dry. But then the wind picked up and in a matter of minutes the whole tent was on top of us and and the poles were snaping. We were trying to gather our stuff in the tent that could not get wet (cell phones, radio, lights etc.) in this time the rain fly poles had snaped in half and the rain fly was not covering 1/4 of the tent. Due to the top of the tent being made of mesh all the water was flowing in on us. We had a river of water in the tent! We ran for shelter and spent the rest of the night there. The next morning we went to look at the damage. 4 of the 6 poles were snaped (2 of them in 2 places). The tent was a better kiddy pool then it was a tent, we had about three inches of water in the tent. The whole tent was still staked down and even the lines off the rain fly were still staked but poles snaped. I will be looking for a tent that has stronger poles! Oh and by the way you can not get replacement parts for this tent.

good tent better price

Bought this tent to replace an older three room tent. I have only had one chance to use it so far but I am pleased. It is easy to set up, easy to get a good tight pitch. The price can't be beat.

Best bad weather family tent

This is the Red Canyon Coleman tent and its awesome. Its about 6.5 ft in the middle so not as much headroom, but that is the tradeoff for bad weather performance, which you normally are not going to get in a 17ft long tent. This is one of Colemans best bad weather tents. It survived a 60mph windstorm near Bryce canyon. We had to help hold it up on the inside, but it survived. I have had it for about 12 years. It has probably been on 30 weekend adventures and three 7 days camps. This tent has never leaked, and i had to start replacing the bungees at about 10 years, and the zipper started getting stuck about a year ago. There is a little door to vent it, but the dog thinks its his doggy door. This tent packs up easy! The tent bag is big enough. You can put this tent up yourself, but two people get it done best in about 15 minutes. This is the best family tent you will find if you value weather performance over headroom.

Waterproof, sound, and sturdy!

We received this tent as a Christmas gift. We love it! Our family of 4 fits in here just right. We have a queen sized raised air mattress, plus 2 twin size floor air mattresses. We still have room for the bags and other items without anything touching the sides of the tent. The first time we set it up in our yard, we made sure to leave it up through a storm that came through. It poured on this tent and the water just beaded right off of it (obviously the rainfly was on, too). Checked it out afterwards and not a drop inside. We did a week long camping trip to door county and there was another few rounds of rainstorms that came through, one night it was a crazy amount of rain and still nothing wet in the tent! I think one of the great features that allows it to be so waterproof is that the tarp-like material comes up about 6-8 inches all the way around the base of the tent. The only drawback or con that we found - and maybe this is completely normal with new tents, but the set-up of this tent is pretty snug. We've tried it both ways, giving it slack, and making it taught, and it still was snug when setting it up. So much so, that the door can be a little hard to open, so just be careful with the zipper and watch your seams if that is the case. Otherwise, enjoy a nice dry bed and floor with this great tent!

More room than you'll need

After i got the tent home from the store i decided it might be a good idea to set it up on the lawn before the actual trip. Nothing worse trying to pitch an unfamiliar tent by head lights in the rain. Setting it up at home won't prevent the darkness or the rain but at least i would know what all the parts are and where they go :). First of this tent is huge. It can be pitched by one adult without too much aggravation in calm weather. The downside to doing it by yourself is striking the tent and trying to fold it so it will fit back into the barely adequate zippered case. As is it packed it was an easy matter to identify all the parts and following the included instructions which are permanently attached to the inside of the carrying case, i had the tent up solo in about 15 minutes give or take. The most difficult part being inserting the 2 main support poles which crossover the center portion of the tent. Not really all that difficult once you find out that pushing rather than pulling them into the sleeves is the key. The 4 stake rings on the main body of the tent each have 2 pins that are inserted into the ends of the fiberglass support rods. This arrangement works very well. Referring back to the pole sleeves, only the upper most portion of the tent has sleeves. The lower portion of the rods hook to the tent with plastic hooks attached to the tent with sewn in nylon web. I think i would rather have these hooks all along the rods rather than the nylon sleeves. The tent will actally support itself without stakes when all 4 rods are in place. After getting the tent up it was a fairly simple matter to attach the included fly sheet. After getting the fly on i went inside to admire my handywork and really was surprised at the amount of space inside. Overall impressions; construction is typical Coleman quality 5 of 5 ease of setup- 1 person capable 4.5 of 5 (2 people a snap) actual useable space - plenty of room 5 of 5 (rated to sleep 8 - it could be done if you dont mind lining up like sardines. I would say 2 adults and 2-4 kids would find it comfortable) In actual field use it was sprinkling rain and a there was a good breeze. 2 of us had it up before we were anywhere close to being wet. Once up we noticed no leaks. The tent is quite quiet in a breeze no annoying flapping or anything. We noticed no condensation on the inside the next morning the tent is well ventilated even with the door and windows zipped completely. Minuses: I think the only things i would change are the metal rod stakes that come with it and the cheesy plastic mallet for them. These are famous for not holding in actual field use. The carry case is typical of most you find it only holds the folded tent the first time from the factory after that in actual use you stuff the tent in and the seams will almost certainly part at some point. Plan on getting a more substantial and roomier tent bag after the 3rd or 4th trip. I did purchase 2 packs of the smaller glow in the dark plastic stakes and had good results with them. The smaller ones work fine you dont really need the larger ones. Overall the pluses outweigh the minuses on this one. If you need a well built tent for 4-6 people this one will fill the need.
