Cannon business model seems to be give away the printers super cheap, and then make some money on the printer cartridges. The Cannon Printer and Cartridges work great! The ink does seem to run out way too fast. I think I only used my printer twice in about 1 year and the black printer ink is already out!
Years ago I tried using those cheap re-fillable ink cartridges and they do work but they are extremely messy and you need to be mechanically inclined to get those cheap refills to work and then they always seem to leak. So for me those are not very good at all.
Non-brand name pre-filled cartridges seem OK but not all of the time. Seems like about 1/2 the time when I've purchased and used a non name brand ink cartridge there were bad issues such as leakage inside the printer and also one time the aftermarket ink cartridge worked ok at printing but didn't show up on the software as being full. So the printer kept saying that the ink was out.
One thing that I have found that might be helpful to someone in a bind, needing to print something, is to use 'how to print in greyscale mode cannon printer' <---- search that. It allows your printer to print in black using only the color ink cartridge ( which usually seems to be full! )
Cannon Printers? They work great!
Cannon Printer Cartridges? They are the best for Cannon printers and work great! ( they also sell an 'xl' version which holds more ink for a few extra dollars ) -- no headaches of trying to save money with re-fill (messy) or aftermarket (leaks, still shows empty even when full etc.)
Final thought: If you need the ink then buy it, remember the Cannon printers are cheap and the company may not have made much money, if any, on the sale of the printer and are bargaining on making some money off of the printer ink cartridges.
Having the printer is a convenience and that costs money, if you are on a tight budget I think you can print things out at Office Supply stores for super cheap ( like pennies per page )
