This printer is not set up to work with Mac. Constantly is disconnecting from the WiFi. Always prints two sided. Not user friendly whatsoever.

I purchased the ImageClass MF4890dw a couple years ago. I had been happy to find a copier/scanner/printer to resolve my home office needs. I had several problems: my wireless password is long, and the Cannon kept forgetting it as I didn't leave it on 24/7. Re-entering the wireless password was painful, and annoying. Frequently even when entered correctly I had to fuss with my network to get the printer to be seen. Then the fuser went - which was surprising as I hadn't printed more than 1000 pages (if that). Apparently the fuser cannot be easily replaced. So I can't print or copy - but I also cannot scan as this takes the entire device down. I feel like this was money thrown away. I am not impressed with this device, and will expedite its trip to the (ecologically) appropriate junk pile. I make my living testing software, imaging, and medical devices, although this device was purchased for my personal use. Not impressed with this imageClass mf4890dw.

After connecting to a wireless router the printer works for a while. Suddenly it changes IP address and you have to reprogram. Time consuming and complicated. Eventually one gives up on networking and connects the computer directly to the printer. This worked for a while but not any more. The scanner quit working a long time ago. The only thing that works is the copier but the internal battery might kill that function to. This is too bad as the product is wonderful when it works. My advice to Cannon is to stick to what they are good at and outsource networking to either HP or some other US company. I wish I could send you a bill for this lousy product. Perhaps I should upload a video that shows me running over the 4800 in my F250.

Stick with a single function

The laser printer works great. I love the ease of use of the duplex printing. Quality is great, speed is fantastic. Printer drivers loaded first time and hasn't missed a beat. These days I think the fax option has outlived it's usefulness. Scan and email is much more popular. The scanner is very disappointing. I bought the machine because I wanted the self-feeding duplex scanner. I have a Canon P-215 portable scanner that works great so I thought the bigger scanner would be the same. Wrong. The duplex scanning is mechanical (there is only one scan head so the paper has to be mechanical flopped over inside the machine) which doesn't work. The scan speed is 1/10 that of the P-215 and the quality is not as good. The scanner drivers simply would not load and I had to get customer support to figure it out. Turns out their 215 driver was preventing the 4890 scanner from working. For the price I'm still happy with the printer and would have paid that for a single function laser printer. Canon needs to take the 215 scanner and put it in the 4890 to make a perfect machine.

The printing quality is excellent. The ease of use is terrible. You have to be at the printer to perform most functions instead of being able to perform from the computer. The fax machine has to scan one page at a time. You cannot just put the sheets in an automatic document feeder. I have figured out how to fax and have used it but I have to be at the printer for multiple pages. For scanning, you have to be at the machine in order to scan to the computer. Copying always does 2 sided and it is not easy to do a single page when desired. After a month I have not been able to receive a fax automatically even though my phone line is dedicated to the computer.

4-in-1 desktop laser unit top rated in 2015 CR Buying Guide.....New printer in sealed box came without any literature, software, or warranty paperwork. That said waiting on Big Box chain supplier to either replace this obviously used printer or supply needed info. That said...downloaded drivers from Canon website, unzipped, and launched drivers. Hint 1: Canon could be more user friendly and clearly label the file that is the executable rather than the user having to guess. Hint 2: for computer to recognize the printer after powering up printer, needed to unplug the USB cable and then reconnect the USB cable again.

I purchased this printer from a local big box retailer in February, 2014. I carefully chose a box that had not been opened or drop kicked during shipping. This specific Canon printer was recommended by a friend as a reliable B&W Printer. However, since the time of purchase, I have had to constantly re-program my wireless connection (as in every few days). This is totally unacceptable, frustrating and to be honest, this printer is going to wind up the same place my last color ink jet printer ended up….the local landfill.

My last printer was a Canon inkjet which still runs fine after 6 years. But it gradually dawned on me that a laser would have lower operating costs, and other advantages. I wanted another Canon, and was able to get this one at a killer price. It prints much faster than my old printer. The print quality is much better -- really crisp and excellent. And the toner costs are much less. I can also print to it wirelessly from my iPad and iPhone. Had it about two months and I couldn't be happier.

This printer will seem to work at first but you will find yourself wanting to take it and beat with a baseball bat because it eventually will not connect to your computer. Do yourself a favor and get a different printer.
