Great Quality, Pinch-Free, Heavy Duty
This review is for the 8.5 foot ladder with Soft-Close Locking Mechanism and model 20309T1ASE COSCO SmartClose Telescoping Aluminum Ladder. I have been wanting one of these ladders for a while now and must say it's probably the best on the market for size, weight allowance, closed or opened dimensions and the total weight of this ladder. This ladder features the pinch-free SmartClose system. You simply press the unlocking lever on each side at the bottom of ladder and the ladder begins to close slowly to not pinch your fingers. Once the ladder is fully closed, wrap the nylon strap and snap the included plastic buckle on each end of the strap. This great small compact ladder weighs 17.44 Lbs. When opened, the ladder measures 103.9"H x 19.41"W x 2.99"D and closed it measures 28.62"H x 19.41"W x 2.99"D. The distance between each step is 10.875" and each step (rung depth) is 1.625" wide. It has a 300LB capacity and 12-14 foot max reach depending on your height. As for safety features it has a locking indicators at each step which shows green when locked and red when not locked fully. It is a stable ladder made of industrial grade aluminum and comes in 3 different sizes, 8.5ft, 10.5ft 12.5ft. I have a huge cargo carrier on top of my Subaru Outback and this ladder serves me well for putting stuff in and out of it. Then it simply folds to a mere 28.62"H closed while stored. I would like to note several things. The max reach really depends on your height, the angle the ladder is leaning which takes away from the overall max reach. This ladder fully opened measures 8'8", I am 5'6", so I climb up to the 4 step from the top which gives me personally the additional height I require and in your case may be different. Also, practicing good safety, you are really not supposed to stand on the top 2-3 steps on any ladder. You do not have to fully extend ladder, you can leave some sections collapsed if you want. Look at my pictures which show it not fully extended. The soft close feature allows each section to slowly close by a cushion of air in the frame. It does not shut all at once and pinch/bite your fingers. I love this ladder! I give it 2 thumbs up !!!

Great Idea, Sketchy Use
This ladder has some great features that look promising and functionable at first, but it lacks in stability. Climbing up onto this ladder was sketchy, I was completely worried the entire time trying to climb up. I was so nervous that I refused to go up and higher than a foot and a half off of the ground. I was unable to even change a light bulb without feeling like I was going to completely fall off. First of all, to make the automatic return feature work, the inside of the ladder is hollow. Because it is hollow, it lacks the girth to provide extra and necessary stability. Also, the feet on my tile slipped. It did not grip inside of my house, so much so, that I am afraid to even try to use outside of my house where the fall would not be as forgiving. Finally, the ladder is a lay flat ladder, there is no place for an extra set of legs that stabilize the process of climbing up, there are only two legs on this ladder. If you choose to use this ladder, it is absolutely necessary to have a second person holding it steady for you so that you do not fall backwards or sideways and I am not close to 300 pounds.

Awesome ladder

I am so glad they started making convenient ladders that do not take much space in your closet! My house is very limited on space so everything has to be compact and folding, collapsible and shrinkable. That is why I was so happy when I got this ladder. It is 8 feet tall when open and only about two or three feet when collapsed. It is super easy to open it and even easier to close. Every point has a red and green indicator to let you know if the ladder is properly open. When closing the ladder it is almost impossible to pinch your fingers since the ladder has a special mechanism that allows it to collapse slowly, therefore preventing pinched fingers and a lot of cursing. The ladder is made out of aluminum which makes it very light and easy to carry around. I would definitely recommend it for anybody's house because it takes almost no space and is very durable and reliable.

Perfect mid-size ladder

For those who want the quick review, this ladder is EASY to... lift, store, transport, erect, and collapse. And at 10.5 feet long, will easily reach almost every first-story roof.

OK, the details:

Let's start with storage - minimal space required. It's only a hair over 2.5 feet tall - far less space taken up than an extension ladder or even a step ladder.

How 'bout moving/transportation? Again, no big deal - It's a bit heavier than your typical lightweight aluminum step ladder, but much lighter than the extension version. When collapsed, you simply tuck it under your arm and haul it away - it even has a smooth finger pad under the bottom rung. And as for transportation... when was the last time you were able to fit a 10-foot ladder in the trunk of a Honda Civic??

To set it up, simply unhook the clasped band (a lot like the kiddy straps in the grocery store shopping cart) and pull up on the top section of the ladder. Each layer locks in place 'till the entire ladder is extended.

Reversing the process is even easier. Push the two spring-loaded sliders embedded in the bottom rung and the ladder collapses - slowly, one rung at a time. It took all of 15 seconds to extend, and about 10 to collapse - what could be simpler??

It's also nice to see the max weight limit for the climber is 300 pounds. Typical lightweight step-ladders are 200-250 pound capacity.

The only drawback I could see is - at 10.5 feet (14 foot "reach") you may not be able to access (for example) the top of the windows on the second story of the average 2-story home or business.

Bottom line, would I recommend it - absolutely!

Nice comfortable climb

I am fortunate to receive this COSCO Smart Close Telescoping Ladder from The Spark Reviewer Program. This is an excellent extension ladder. What I liked best was the climb. I got the feel compared to other aluminum ladders popular brand names included that you were on sturdy footing. I have read tons of reviews about people feeling there ladder will not hold there weight. Those were name brands. This ladder does quite the opposite. There is no flexibility in the steps so you get the sense when climbing up to the roof that its safe and secure. I could feel relaxed while working on the ladder. I should add that the ladder I was using was the 12.5ft ladder with max reach of 16ft. Again I had max reach of 16ft. I could tell by the number of rungs on the ladder which is 12. I measured the ladder from top point to bottom and it was just over 12.5 maybe even close to 13ft.

I like the longer ladder because I now have the flexibility to use outdoor for gutter cleaning while also being able to use indoor to paint a wall or wash walls. The portability is what makes this the ladder that it is. I brought this outside in the garage and the first thing I noticed was my other aluminum ladder was stored way at the top of the ceiling in the garage while this one is about 3ft.

This Cosco ladder is quite easy to carry. The way its designed makes you feel like you're carrying a suitcase. It is somewhat heavy but that is expected. I believe the weight was roughly 25lbs.

The ladder locks into place and each rung of the ladder goes from red to green showing that the rung is locked and ready to go. There was some effort needed to open and close the ladder to the desired height. My biggest workout was opening and closing the ladder to different levels and moving from room to room. It was no big deal just carrying the ladder once I had it at a set height. It seemed a little confusing at first as to how to open and close. With that amount of weight it was a bit stressful. Once I got the hang of how the ladder worked things went a little better.

Yet, the biggest thing I noticed was how much safer the climb felt compared to name brand aluminum ladders. This wasn't bouncy like you feel on others. It was easy to move around the gutter and compacts to a small storage size.

To conclude: Seems tricky at first and watch your back. After you get the feel of the opening and closing its as good as I've found for the price for a nice extension ladder that can be used both indoors and outdoors.

One final point: I noticed a lot of people asking about sizes of this ladder. Again, the one I used was a 12.5ft ladder with a maximum reach of 16ft. I could never reach that 16ft mark. You can tell the size by the number of steps. 12 steps=12ft. The Cosco Smartclose ladder is also made in smaller sizes which are a bit lighter but not sure if they would reach a roof outside. I would highly recommend.

COSCO SmartClose Telescoping Aluminum Ladder

COSCO SmartClose Telescoping Aluminum Ladder with Pinch-Free, Soft-Close Locking Mechanism (300-Pound Capacity, 14-foot Max Reach) This is one of the easiest ladders I have used for home projects.

I did not know there were ladders like this. We have one of those super heavy info-merical ladders. The Cosco Ladder is much more user friendly.

The Smart Close Ladder is easy carry and takes little space to store. It has a small footprint so easy to store just about anywhere. The ladder itself to carry is heavy.

To get started just unlock the easy latch and start pulling up on the rungs. They auto lock. So you can choose from a short to ladder full length. The rungs have a red and green box on each rung. The green tell you the rung is locked and safe to step on.

COSCO SmartClose Telescoping Aluminum Ladder with Pinch-Free, Soft-Close Locking Mechanism is made of heavy duty aluminum. It's can hold up to 300 lbs.

When it's time to close just use the thumb lock. Definitely watch your fingers when closing not to get them pinched in between the wrongs that are sliding down to close. It is a nice slow controlled closure.

When done hook the closures and pick up to go back to storage. Could not be easier to use this ladder for home projects. https://youtu.be/Ycae-IqOC7U

The COSCO SmartClose Telescoping Aluminum Ladder with Pinch-Free, Soft-Close Locking Mechanism would make a great house warming gift or one for your home for everyday projects. We used the ladder to take the Christmas lights down from the house.

Easy storage, carrying and using.

COSCO Smart Close Telescoping Aluminum Ladder with Pinch-Free, Soft-Close Locking Is such a great idea. As a women it is so hard to carry a heavy extension ladder and then to have to extend it is another hassle. Just trying to store a full size extension ladder is a hassle. Well let me tell you how much I love a telescoping ladder.

I can store it so easily in my garage without taking up a lot of space. This telescoping ladder has a strap that wraps around the rungs to lock it all together and a nice solid hand grip to pick the whole ladder up under your arm. How convenient is that? To telescope all the way the is simple. Put your foot on the bottom rung and start pulling up till the ladder is fully extended and locks. If you do not need it extended all the way, you put your foot on the bottom rung and start from the bottom locking each rung in place till you acquire the height you desire.

The feel of walking up and down is the same as a extension ladder but you don't have to deal with the uneven feel of going from a double rung to a single rung. This telescoping ladder has a very strong balanced feel.

Lowering it back down is as easy as pushing two buttons with your thumbs. You slide the buttons till the green dot shows and it automatically starts to slowly lower.

We do a lot of repair on rentals and being able to throw it into the back of our vehicle and not have to strap a long ladder to our vehicle roof rack is a big plus for me. This will even fit into most car trunks. I

I left this out in the winter freezing temperatures and it still went up and lowered with no problem. Plus the rubber hand grip kept my hands off the frozen metal. So I would say the best things about this ladder is how compact it is and storability.

Quality / Convenience / Safety

This ladder is wonderful quality and so convenient! I used to have a 16' telescopic that was much less safe than this ladder. You'd to press the buttons in to collapse it just hoping your fingers wouldn't get pinched while holding it as it slammed down all at once; just not safe. But this ladder has nice sized grips and easy to push releases, and the telescoping feature collapses nice and gently, and safely, in just a few seconds. The floor grips are good quality, as are the top plastic pieces. I forgot to put towels on the top rings as they bumped up against my wall when I used it the first time, but to my surprise no rub marks at all. And no marks the other two times I used it that day either. I used it to finally put plants on a shelf above my front door where cats can't get to them, which I had never bothered to do because my a-frame ladder was too much of a pain to bring upstairs to water them once a week. This fits right into my tiny hall closet by the door, no problem. That same day I also weather-proofed a window and hung a painting, and then stuck it right back in the closet without having to go to the cold basement or garage. This ladder is a must have for everyone; renters and home-owners alike.

Compact for storage - leaning wall ladder.

I am reviewing the Cosco smartclose telescoping aluminum ladder with 14 foot reach. The 14 foot reach is dependant on height, you may achieve a higher or lower reach depending on your height. The ladder I received is 12.5 feet tall. I am a 5'5 female who is wanting a ladder for working outside doing chores like cleaning out gutters checking out my roof. I gave this ladder a try hoping it would be lightweight and easily portable, since bulky heavy ladders are a challenge for me. This ladder needs to be leaned against a wall or sturdy location which I didn't fully consider. The ladder can not sit safely against my roofline, my gutters jut out in the way. I liked the smartclose feature and how small the ladder compacts for storage. I didn't like that the ladder was still pretty heavy to move around and lift into place. Also care needs to be taken so that the point of the ladder touching your roofline needs to be at the black reinforced section, I wish that wasn't a worry when placing the ladder. I received this ladder as part of the spark reviewer program, and the opinions are my own.
