I need to start working my arms a bit but as a women I'm looking to tighten and tone, I don't want to develop huge biceps. I have some good info on the net on what exercises I can do but the info on the weight to use is vague. I was wondering if the 2 pound ones are a good one to start with or would I move up to a higher weight dumbbell so quickly that I'd wish I'd ordered heavier ones. Thanks in advance.

    • A. Personally I started with 1# weights. Now I have the 3#as the 1# felt like feathers. My trainers emphasize the need to do the exercises slowly, giving both parts of the movement the same amount of time. The slower (within reason) you do the movments the more exercise you get.l I think this is primarily so you don't go 1,2,3,4, quickly and bring the arm up and down inside of 4 seconds!

    • A. I have 8 lbs. now and I thought they were to heavy so I bought 3 lbs. I had only been using dumbells for a little while before I got the 3 lbs. and they were way too light. I suggest the 5 lbs at least if your just trying to tone up.

    • A. I think that you would want to go ahead and get heavier ones. Even 8 lb weights are considered relatively light, so as far as bulking up, you won't see too much of that if you stick to under 15lbs. It also depends on which muscle you are targeting. For example, biceps will respond to high reps of low weight, but the shoulders won't. That's why I keep a range of weights, rather than just one set; I use 3 lbs if I am doing cardio exercises or if the muscle (my triceps!) is weak and can't stand much weight. I go up to 8 - 15 lbs for shoulder work. Trust me; even just starting out, heavier weights will get you the results without bulking up, particularly if you prefer short, intense workouts to long ones. Don't be afraid to go up to 10lbs, I promise you will get long, lean muscles.

    • A. You definitely won't have to worry about large biceps with 2lb weights. You need to use a weight that you can only curl or lift 3-5 times before getting exhausted to get huge biceps (for women 20-40lbs to start). Depending on your age, fitness level, and any old injuries, 2lb would be for someone who's older, never worked out before (or rarely) and maybe has a hand, shoulder or other arm injury. If you don't, I would recommend at least a 5lb weight. This is a bit more challenging than a 2lb weight, but sore today, strong tomorrow! You can work up to a heavier weight (8lb, then 10lb). I've started at 5 and am now at an 8; about to graduate to 10 and trust me, I wish my arms were bigger! I have noticed muscle definition which is my goal as it is yours (not huge biceps either). Overall, try and challenge yourself to a 5lb neoprene coated because metal is hard to grip if your hands sweat and are really just uncomfortable. The CAP's are PERFECT. I am a huge fan of mine and wish they made heavier weights. Happy working out and good luck!

    • A. I would suggest, and this may sound stupid but to start with a can of soup or something that weighs one or two pounds and do some bicep curls. Start with two or three sets of a count of 8 to 10 repititions. If this is easy and the next day you feel nothing I would start with three pounds. If you feel it start with 2 pounds and work your way up with sets and rep's. You will not build big muscles with such light weights only tone. I have lifted for years and have 13 inch biceps but that is because I use 15lb weights and do 100 rep's on the bicep's. Good luck.

Here I am again. I originally purchased three Cap weight sizes to renew an old habit--strength training. Since I started my exercise program late in the summer, I've progressed to a dumb-bell level that is two pounds heavier. I'm enjoying my workout so much, Cap can soon expect me to buy a heavier dumbbell that will up my weightlifting potential! Call me crazy, but it is something about how pretty these dumbbells are that make me look forward to each workout. Also, the weights are well balanced, making the slow lifting required of strength training a treat to experience. I just focus on the targeted muscle and then patiently lift, slowly lower. Want another benefit to using a Cap weight for your health building regimen? Well, here goes. Cap's distribution centers are located in Texas, California, Georgia, Illinois, and New Jersey--where they create and sustain employment for nearby willing local workers. So go ahead--build your health AND strengthen our economy--buy American!

Surprised nobody has mentioned this at all in any review. Fast shipping, $4 apiece cannot be beat. However, be aware that the dye from these dumbbells rubs off onto your hands the moment you touch them. Not a huge deal as it washes right off, but I am pregnant and don't appreciate this as I have no idea if the dye is toxic when absorbed through the skin. Have been wearing latex gloves to use them, but other than that they are of good quality. Just don't be alarmed when they unexpectedly stain your palms as I was! And don't put them down on anything they might possibly stain, i.e. clothing or bedding. Still recommend, though!

Basically it boiled down to price per pound for me. These were the cheapest I've found. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice they were. I think the neoprene cover is actually better than rubber. It doesn't feel like the soft kind they use on braces, it's more like a thin, tight, rough fabric like covering. My wife thought it was funny that I bought the pink ones (they only come in pink at the 1 pound size). I use these to simulate the weight of 16oz sparring gloves when I shadow box. I have large hands, they barely fit the length of the handle on the dumbbell, but it's not uncomfortable. Very good value from Walmart. Highly recommend. The ship to store was hassle free as well.

I bought the 1lb. weights to use for power walking & the 5lb. weights just to use for training. The neoprene covering is always a nice detail because they're soft & not slippery. The price is great but, make note that if you want a pair, you need to order 2 of whatever weight you're ordering.

I use these for strength training. As a 70 yr old I need more muscles in my arms and upper back. I work out 3 times a week and these weights are just what I need. The covering gives me a good grip and I like the fact that they won't roll when you set them down. Great price too.
