Purchased by my mom as a gift for my 12 year old daughter, this sewing machine was simple to use right out of the box (provided you follow the directions). The enclosed manual and CD are very helpful, and brother has some great tutorials on their site. If you are buying this as a first machine, I recommend the Brother starter kit or some other accessories including extra needles, thread, bobbins, etc. Walmart shipping, pick up and customer service were fantastic. Could not be more pleased with this purchase.

I'm very pleased with my LB6800PRW sewing and embroidery machine, It runs quietly, was easy to understand the stitches and set up. The embroidery was easy to get the stitches on the screen to embroider on the fabric, along with threading the machine and bobbin. I'm having difficulty with obtaining embroider designs off the internet to get them on the machine, but that maybe user error. I will probably have to contact support to figure that out. The only thing i would have changed is I would have bought a sewing embroidery machine that had more embroidery designs already on the machine. There are lots of letters and numbers that make up the majority of the designs on this machine. But as far as function and ease of use. I'm pleased.

This machine is a good buy for the money. Prior to purchase, I viewed and priced several high end machines of different brands with similar features. This model is for those of us who don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a machine. I purchased this one sight unseen on line, after reading the reviews. I must admit that even with all my years of sewing experience I chose not to jump right in and start sewing with it. Rather, I viewed the included DVD a few times, read on-line from Brother about the features before placing thread in the machine. I did not want to make any costly errors which could be user related with the electronics of this machine and I am not sorry that I did. This will be my first and last purchase of a sewing/embroidery machine but I consider it a good investment even at my age. (I sent in the rebate via regular USPS and promptly received a reply from Brother that it had been received.) It is a nice machine, user friendly, and so much better than my 11 year old machine. I love the auto needle threader--it really works! The bobbin is a breeze to fill & set up. The push button for sewing is a great asset and I absolutely love the needle up/down feature as well as the auto thread cutter. Stitches are of good quality right out of the box. I love it! I must add that the case/transporter included is not quite what I had expected. The machine case for transporting is separate from the unit with the wheels. The machine case could topple off the wheeled base.

I was very pleased with everything that this machine does. I was thinking of purchasing a much more expensive machine, I'm very glad I chose this one. The only thing I can think of as a disadvanage is the hoop size. It's great to be able to design on the computer and then plug it into the machine.

But why is there a difference in price? Is it just because of the tote? Are the machines the same? Please help me out! Cheers

    • A. After looking at the brother site and comparing/cking off both machines, these are the differences: -SE400 states that it has "8" Standard Presser Ft incl/LB6800 has "7" -LB6800 states 1 for # of spools/SE400 does not list -SE400 states "yes" for software upgrades/LB6800 does not list -SE400 states "yes" for Accessory Storage/LB6800 states "built-in" -SE400 does not include carrying case/LB6800 includes soft cover case -SE400 includes 3 screwdrives, 1 bobbin (plus other accessories, but these are the only 2 differences)/LB6800 includes 2 screwdrivers, 3 bobbins incl clips -SE400 states wt of machine at 10.9lbs/LB6800 weighs in at 16.09lbs -LB6800 lists that it is compatible media is "media card"/SE400 does not list this. Other than the above EVERYTHING ELSE listed was EXACTLY THE SAME. I am contacting Brother as to the wt difference...6lbs seems like an awful lot. But looking at all reviews, most everyone seems very happy with both machines!

    • A. They are exactly the same with these exceptions: Built-in push button thread cutter, Electronic variable sewing speed control & One touch start/stop/reverse operations. There might be more, but those are the biggies that it looks like the SE400 doesn't have.

    • A. There's a set of 3 hoops available from a few sellers on eBay and also individually from the Brother website which are: the 2X4, the 4X4 and the 4X6. Also another one for embroidering on baseball caps. The embroidery area is 4X4 on the LB 6800 PRW, same as the SE 400 and the SE 350 and a few other Brother combo machines, but, not all of the Brother embroidery and/or combo machines. On the 4X6, one can move the hoop up a notch to continue embroidering lengthwise instead of taking the 4X4 hoop apart and re-hooping it to continue doing up up to another 2 inches for names and the like. The Brother 5X7 and larger hoops won't work properly on the LB 6800 PRW. The embroidery hoops have special notches in them which require being lined up properly on the machine and compatable hoops must be used for same. IMPORTANT: Be sure that the hoops you use say that they are for the Brother machines PLUS your machine model number is also listed for use on the hoops. BEWARE: Some of the Brother machines also use different embroidery hoops than the ones used on the LB 6800 PRW.

    • A. No, the largest area this machine can embroider is 4x4. I believe you can combine patterns manually for borders, etc but for one continued piece, it's only 4x4.

    • A. The sewing machines, the SE 400 & the LB 6800 PRW seem to be the same. This one, the LB 6800 PRW comes with a Project Runway Tote for the machine that has wheels on it. When buying one of them from JoAnn's, expect to pay around $65 plus tax, etc for a tapestry sewing machine tote with the wheels on it, as I recently did for my SE 350. The only difference between the SE 400, the LB 6800 PRW and the SE 350 sewing/embroidery machines is that the SE 350 doesn't have the computer hook-up slot for the computer cable for downloading embroidery designs from the computer or the Internet. I have to use the Brother PED Basic plus a card to do that with my SE 350. All 3 of them have the card slot for the embroidery design card and all 3 use the PES format for the embroidery designs. All 3 of them have just the 4X4 inch embroidery areas for the 4X4 inch embroidery designs. The 5X7 embroidery designs cannot be used on these 3 machines. My SE 350 computerized section doesn't even recognize the the 5X7's when doing embroidery work, even when they're on the embroidery card. I bought my SE 350 a few months before the SE 400 came out and missed out on having that computer hookup slot on my machine and just love it and it is constantly in use. Even take it with me to our monthly ASG sewing group meetings in the wheeled tote.

    • A. There is NO difference in the two machines. Brother assigned it a different model number because of Project Runway. Home Shopping Network got their own model number as well. Yes on buttonholes at 5
