Perfect rice for my cooking

Calrose rice is a high quality rice and affordable. It is a short grain and sticky rice , specially if you put too much water. For the purpose I use these rice it's Great, I cook congee with chicken an Asian soup and the taste and texture is very good. I will buy it again. If you want a loose rice for fried rice I would use basmati or other long grain rice.

Got Rice

Although we like different varieties of rice (depends on the menu), Botan is the favorite, in my household. I raised a family of 5 on it. Now that 2 of them are married and 1 has a girlfriend, I serve 8 of us. For a church potluck, I make 20 cups, at a time. Always well received.

Good rice, good price

So happy to get this rice. Although the non washing rice is not my favorite, I was happy to get any rice with all the rice hoarding. Thank you for making this rice available. Very much appreciated.

Finally, I can get MY RICE

My wife grew up in California on Calrose Botan rice. Since we moved to the eastern U.S., we have not been able to find a supplier. Now Walmart ships right to our door! Thanks!

1. I think it is short. It doe not need as much liquid as the longer rices or else it will turn soggy.
by zara444
2. This is medium grain rice. If you make sushi, you had better buy Japanese rice such as "Tamaki Gold", "Tamanishiki", "Kagayaki" and etc. Even if you do not make sushi, I will never recommend this Botan rice.
by MrsStonehead
3. It is a short grain and yes, can be a good cheaper substitute for sushi rice...

4. Yes. It is Japanese rice.

1. All asian rice have a sticky consistency unlike other types of rice. IT IS sticky if you are just looking for sticky rice that is fluffy. However, if you are looking for REAL oriental STICKY rice, that is called "SWEET RICE" and can only usually be found at an asian supermarket. "Sweet rice" is just a little sweeter and richer than the typical asian "white rice" as well as is MUCH stickier than the regular "white rice." So, if you are simply looking for white rice that is sticky, yes this will do! But if you are looking for the real "STICKY RICE", go for "Sweet rice". THe term "sweet rice" does not mean it is actually sweeter, it just means it is TRULY sticky rice and a richer slight sweeter flavor. "Sweet, sticky rice" does not taste like sugar in any way ... but is LOVED by all who have tried it and eat it. I am asian and I hope this helps you in making your decision as to whether to buy or not. I did not personally like or prefer this rice. I prefer you go to an asian supermarket to get the real rice!

2. There is a particular sticky rice to make sticky rice but like the sushi rice and calrose it is a short grain which normally is on a sticky side. I personally use these rice to make sticky rice, rice pudding and for making sweet desserts and it's great for making them and it's a good tasting rice. I did not do sushi , personally I think it is a good alternative for making sushi, if you wet your hand with water or oil before spreading on the mat it should be easy.

1. I'm not sure. You might call the manufacturer to get a straight answer. I always wash my rice 2 - 3 times before cooking anyway. This is a short to medium grain, sticky rice.... about the same that you'd get in a Japanese restaurant. I think its the best choice at a reasonable cost. My mother was Japanese, and we were raised mostly on this brand. I love that I can get it at walmart...and occasionally its on sale on walmart.com.

2. Not sure about that. I would recommend you ask the vendor. I purchased the 20lb bag. If you like "sticky rice" like what you can find in a traditional Japanese restaurant or in Hawaii then this is the product for you.
