I have only fired 50 or so pellets so far and it is all I was hoping for. Right out of the box with 4 pumps my first 2 shots were in a half dollar circle. I tried a break barrel before this and was not satisfied and returned for this. The break barrel was easier with just one action to ready but much nosier and a jerk reaction from the spring when fired. The Benjamin takes a little effort to pump but fires smoothly. Trigger pull is smooth and upon firing there is no jerk reaction! The Quality is very good and especially like the real wood stock! For just shooting targets and defending my yard from squirrels the gun is perfect!

Very fine pellet rifle.
This fine pellet rifle is drilled and tapped for Williams peep sight which makes it much easier to aim accurately. Must pump it up about 8 pumps but don't we all need the exercise?!!
Benjamin 397 review
Exceeded my expectations. I had one of these as a kid in the late 60s and got one for my 11 year old son. Fit and finish is quite good but stain is not deep so apply a 2-3 coats of wipe on satin polyurethane to better protect it and give it a beautiful finish. The iron sights are accurate, the trigger pull is nice, and it groups well. I can still hit a Gatorade bottle at 50 yards. (With 8 pumps the 10.5 grain pellets drop about 12 inches and the 7.9 grain pellets drop about 7 inches. 10.5 gr pellets pack a satisfying wallop.) The rear sight is far enough forward to be usable by my old far-sighted eyes. The stock may develop some looseness as the wood compresses from the stress of pumping. Simply detach the stock and add a few strategically placed layers of duct tape to take up the slack. (Pull pump handle away from barrel to remove tension on mounting bolt when removing stock.) One of the pins on the the pump handle started to work out but I simply applied a trace amount of adhesive and tapped it back in with a phillips head screwdriver. Out of the box, the rear sight was effectively too high for the elevation screw to touch the barrel for adjustment. It was set about 2 inches high at 10 yards which is fine for me, but probably not for others. One can use a C-clamp to bend it down some. This classic gun is still great fun.
WAS AND STILL A GREAT AIR RIFLE
Buy with confidence. You're getting an excellent
Accurate right from the first shot. Weight and balance are perfect. The pumping has been described as difficult but It gets easier after a little use and you really don't need all eight pumps. The gun shoots great with 3 or 4 pumps. This gun is very nice looking and handles small pests with ease. You'll get accuracy even without additional optics. Get it! You won't regret the decision.
