Great Story!

The long halloween was such a great story, the work it's phenomenal. If your looking for a great story read The Long Halloween. Then get the Follow up call Dark Victory. You'll be glad you did.

Best Batman Comic EVER

If you like a dark mystery story coupled with amazingly stunning art work then this is perfect for you.

The plot is mostly cohere

The plot is mostly coherent, but I felt the recurring certainty that the story would make more sense - that various plot twists and characters would be more meaningful - if I were familiar with the Batman mythos, which appears to have the complexity of a modern Eleusinian mystery. This collection offers an origin myth for the villain Two-Face, while introducing Catwoman and Poison Ivy as enigmatic sexual interests of Bruce Wayne, and lots of cameos by characters that (to judge from their Wikipedia entries) are established suras and asuras in their own rights. The art is straightforward; the visuals and the cuts are clever; there's nothing meta, subversive, or ironic about this telling, which is kind of nice.

A really interesting crim

A really interesting crime-noir approach to my favourite superhero (he's so much cooler than Superman, don't deny it), one that's much more effective than anything Frank Miller's done in the last 10 years. Harvey's mental descent and eventual transformation into Two-Face is particularly fascinating. I would have liked to have seen some more dimensions with the many other iconic Batman villains introduced in this edition though, and the ending's a bit too twisty-turny to be truly believable (but I bet you'll never see it coming!) Overall, it's a great piece of work and a must read for any Batman fan, especially if you want to spot all of Christopher Nolan's influences.

This started well & combi

This started well & combined elements of Noir with the Batman Mythos, to great effect. I feel that it got a little lost in the second quarter & at times it became meandering, with an interlude with a particular villain(ess) being little more than detracting page filler in the middle quarters. It picks up again in the last quarter, and finished well. I, unlike others, did not rate the art at all, it did not convey the necessary noirish feel to the excellent story & in places seemed a little childish. Overall, an excellent story, a great Batman story, and a great continuation to some of the events in Year One. Worth a look
