Decent
After about half an hour of getting to know this little machine I learned two things. 1) This is a "Finishing" sander..it ain't one of the big macho sanders!..but it does the job admirably. 2) Forget the cute little vacuum attachment. It does nothing. Poking holes in the paper only diminishes the area of paper..ergo..less sanding. After having said all that, I can honestly say I'm very satisfied with this little machine. It was a good investment.

Okay for light jobs
I should have taken the advice of other reviewers and not purchased it. Its is extremely messy. I would guess that only 70% of the dust actually makes it into the collection bag. Also a moderate amount of pressure is needed even though the directions warn against it. If you are in a hurry--spend the extra money on a better quality sander.

Just What I Wanted

This little sander works perfect for my needs. If I had to list one fault, the dust bag doesn't stay on well and it will only work if you find the sandpaper designed for this sander with the holes in it, which I could not find. But, since I was outside, the dust did not bother me and the sander worked great.

A Fortunate buy

I needed a hand sander and looked ta several advertised , cost being considered and bought this Black and Decker model. The price was what I wanted to spend and the choice was made when I found that Walmart had a free shipping available on purchases.. The sander is lightweight and does a very good job. The sandpaper used, is of the type that has 8 holes in each sheet and in conjunction with the dust bag attachment, minimizes dust . I use it without the dust bag attachment, and cut 4 x 5 sandpaper sheets from larger size sandpaper, as a preference to buying the sandpaper with the holes in it. I like this sander and would rate it as an excellent purchase for very little cost.

Just right for the project

This is a must have if you plan on doing small jobs around the house hold and the applications of use are just enough to get the job done, all you need to know is what sand paper to use and apply weather it's steel or wood etc. the results are based on how well you follow instructions

Excellent Finish Sander for The Money

I completely wore out this same unit. I liked it so much I purchased another. It is excellent finish sander. And it is much quieter then my Makita. I would have awarded it a five star rating except I beilieve it should last longer without replacement. But that is just my opinion. "Peanuts"

Seems to work as expected

I've used this just a couple times and it seems to work just fine. It's a great price for the product and the brand is well known. It doesn't seem to be a sander for hard labor though. Just for hobbists and minor home repairs. Just what I have in mind for it. I've read another reviews about it being hard to place the sheet in the sander but I found it to be extremely easy. You just don't have to apply to much pressure on the surface when sanding in order to have a nice finishing and also to avoid the sheet from falling off the sander. Just read the manual :) I only had two issues with this sander: first, it's 120V only! Oh my! These days, really! I live in a country with 220V electrical lines so it's a problem for me because I need an electric transformer in order to use it. No other way for it to work. Second, the dust collector doesn't seem to be very good. Dust goes all the way through it. Maybe the collector bag is too coarse for it to work properly. Also, it doesn't actually collect all the dust. Anyway, I guess it's better than nothing at all!

Its an O.K. sander

Great for the small jobs. Comfortable to use. A bit messy with the dust collection. I have had one for three years now. For small jobs this is a great unit. The reports about the iffy dust collection are true. Here the unit doesn't do a stellar job. It seems to collect about half of the dust it creates as long as you punch the holes in the paper. I think the biggest flaw in the design is that the motor has a bearing on the bottom and a bronze bushing on the top. There is no way to get oil to the bushing and mine got hot enough to melt the plastic support. Black & Decker doesn't have a replacement part for the unit and I now have a bunch of nifty but useless electrical parts. I'm off to buy some other brand!

Sander

The sander worked without a problem. My sole issue is that the type of sand paper required to use this sander was not sold by Wal-Mart, nor any manufacturer nearby. The sand paper that was sold was not for this sander and I spent more time adjusting the sheets than actually sanding and the dust was everywhere but in the dust catcher. This problem is not with Wal-Mart but with Black & Decker, the company should have at the very least provided the proper paper to sell to provide proper use of the product to have a great reviews.

Its not horrible.

It is small and easy to maneuver, it vibrates so vigorously that it makes your hand go numb rather quickly though. lol. This is good for very small jobs unless you enjoy changing paper every 3-5 minutes. Seriously, these tiny pads are gone in an instant! The dust bag is useless, absolutely useless! I sanded a table top in my kitchen, when I was finished I took the bag off to empty it and there was nothing in it! I mean NOTHING! Not even slightly dusty. This is for outdoor use only without question.

1. The outside diameter of the outlet is 1 1/2 inch. It will work with any vacuum that accepts that size.
by 1AWG
2. Black & Decker does not recommend using the FS540 1/4 Sheet Finishing Sander for drywall sanding. Extended use in this type of application will cause premature failure of the sander. The fine dust generated by sanding will clog the bearings, gears and switch in the sander.
by BlackandDecker
3. According to instruction book, you can attach vac hose. Doesn't say what size. Try this link to manual: http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/documents/English/Instruction%20Manual/487931-00,FS520etc.pdf
by Foo00
4. Yes
by Gilly88
5. No shop vac hose, including the Black and Decker Shop Vac hose will attach to this sander. The small dust collector bag attaches via a round rectangular opening (straight parallel sides with rounded ends) that a hose will not attach to. However the dust collector bag does allow for a significant amount of sanding to be done before it requires emptying.
by FingersFelix
6. The FS540 ¼ Sheet Finish Sander will accept a vacuum hose which has an inside diameter of 1 ¼”.
by BlackandDecker
7. I am not sure about your shop vac but it fit my standard vacuum hose.
by glbrew
8. Yes a shop vac hose plugs right into it.

9. no

1. If you don't use it for wet sanding and your hood is flat it should be O.K. After all, it is a 120V tool.
by 1AWG
2. The FS540 1/4 Sheet Finishing Sander can be used on vehicles.
by BlackandDecker
3. An orbital sander will provide better results on auto-body work, however if the area is small and flat, this sander will do.
by FingersFelix
4. Yes. It would be perfect for small jobs like that. Works good on the plastic headlamp covers too.
by TIGERKG
5. This sander should be close to perfect for auto work. It's small, light and easy to control. I'd try it!
by Caveat
6. yes it says you can use it on paint and metal.

1. I don't. Think there is sandpaper with holes for this sander I think the black pice that comes with it is for so u can put holes in the paper. But not sure.
by Joe2Cool
2. A paper punch is included with the FS540 1/4 Sheet Finishing Sander. This allows you to use regular sandpaper which does not have the holes pre-punched.
by Black&Decker
3. This comes with a hole punch to make your own holes.
by riviesmom
4. the little black cover that comes with sander punches holes in sandpaper you can cut to fit.
by glbrew
5. This comes with a plastic piece that can be used to punch the holes in the sandpaper. Didn't you get the plastic with the product? It's a black piece of plastic with eight peaks in it. You just put the sandpaper in place and then the plastic piece over the sandpaper and push. That's it
