Good Old-Fashioned Film Fun for the Whole Family

Customer review by Dogyeller

Destined to become a classic, Australia is a good old-fashioned movie that has something for everyone, whether you like nature travelogs, stories of the Old West, adventure, World War II, mismatched love, or historical sagas. Part "How the West Was Won" with "African Queen" and "Gone with the Wind.” The scenery and natural formations (including Hugh Jackman) are breath-taking. Unlike most current films, which are focused on a small market niche, the movie harkens back to a bygone era when every member of the family wasn't off in a different corner of the house watching something different, but rather would gather around the TV together on a Sunday night to watch Ed Sullivan, knowing that there'd be something for everyone.

If you think this review is long..skip the movie. What a mess! Any director knows that a movie that requires on-going narration ( by a boy you can't understand ) and sub-titles that move too fast in the beginning and drag at the end is a sure indication of too much information to captivate the audience. Acting weak, scenery not captivating either, looks like the Grand Canyon. Mix of genre's ( Western, Love Story, Fantasy, War) without comedy makes plot choppy but goes to the predictable but ridculous ending. Impossible that she would hear the harmonicia in the ocean amid the chaos on land. Just when we were tryinto flee from the theatre, more sub-titles (ugh) I You have better things to do with your time and money.

Baz Luhrmann's fourth feature film, AUSTRALIA is everything that the original moguls aspired to in their canon of pictures: a broadly-told clearly-drawn epic adventure meant for each imaginable audience member and demographical group. Superbly directed, shot, and edited, with seamless visual effects integrated into his native landscape, with AUSTRALIA, Luhrmann has delivered a throwback film with as much fantasy as reality, set in the country-continent's pre-war and early wartime involvement when the Japanese encroached into the northern territories. The 1939 classic, THE WIZARD OF OZ, is often invoked in theme, song, and actual footage, with Luhrmann painting a portrait of a embellished Aussie group of characters.

This was by far one of the most beautiful films I have seen this year. Baz Luhrman really delivers it all: a picteresque setting in the Northern territory of Australia, well-crafted actors and actresses (who doesn't adore Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman) note: it isn't only the leads that are unforgettably amazing, a WONDERFUL musical score, and a setting that ties in an old love for Western Film with the modern day love for WWII depictions. Baz has not let his audiences down as this movie only further shows his talent as a director, and his geniune love for film. The movie was intense, emotional, and just an adventure to take home. Just go see it and decide for yourself just what you can take away from Australia.

Misses greatness by a half of a Didgeridoo!

The movie Australia seems like it should have it all....and it almost does. This is a rousing tale of historical importance told through the lives of an adventurous couple well-played by Jackman and Kidman. They are surrounded by interesting supporting characters - both of good and bad moral fiber. The use of a young aboriginal boy as a central figure and poetic narrator is masterfully done. This epic movie falls short in the following ways: It is too two dimensional, it is too long and it is too hard to hear much of the heavy Aussie accented conversations at times. Worth seeing but better viewed with slightly lower expectations than perhaps we had. A Koala-ty flick overall - just a kangaroo hop from greatness.
