I installed this on a door that leads to the garage to gain experience with a smart lock. Installation was really quick and easy. It's kinda large, BUT the August Smart Lock Pro has not failed once since it was installed. I feel confident enough to add another August lock to the front door. I use it with Apple HomeKit so I can lock or unlock from anywhere. Great product.

Full review, owned since initial product launch!
I've had this lock coupled with the connect for at least three years now literally since the initial launch. At the time this was a one of a kind product and to this day I couldn't be happier with my decision to buy it. Initially it was definitely a little glitchy, but that is to be expected especially with new bleeding edge technology. The bottom line was I simply couldn't wait to get one and it immediately changed our lives for the better. Happy to say that August quickly resolved all the bugs within a matter of months and I have had no problems ever since.
I've specifically read every one of the negative reviews and the vast majority appear to be operator trouble. This lock is not overly technical, but it will definitely present challenges if you don't understand and aren't comfortable with smart technology. My 70+ year old mother is a prime example of someone who should definitely steer clear of this type of technology. Not just seniors, but anyone lacking a good understanding or interest of smart technology will end up writing one of those bad reviews. Other relevant solutions like a simple keypad lock are definitely a much more sustainable alternative for anyone lacking interest or technically challenged like my mom.
I have a strong Internet connection and I followed the specific instructions for not only the lock, but also for the connect. I can be anywhere in the world and unlock my front door within a matter of seconds, every time of course as long as I have a signal on my phone. I personally travel a lot and let in people all the time. It's so comforting for us not to be handing out and losing track of our house keys and garage door openers. Moreover, to be able to look at my phone app while I am at the airport and quickly see that I didn't forget to lock the front door is pretty cool.
That said, my one and only complaint is that there isn't a battery level indicator. You only get notified through the application when the batteries are low, but not before that and that's absolutely cutting it too close for me. The only solution I could muster was to create a reoccurring reminder every four months in my calendar. It's definitely not ideal, but thus far it's worked for me. Hopefully August developers will soon figure out a way to add a battery level indicator to the app in a future update.
I know this was a rather lengthy review, but I really tried to cover everything I could think of. So, hopefully I addressed most of the questions to those that are unsure whether to purchase this lock or not. I know I'm thrilled I got one!
I love this thing. I don't have to worry about not remembering if I locked the door. Just go on the app and lock it. Also love house it lets you not only know of the door is locked/unlocked it lets you know if it was left open. If your looking for a smart lock August is the way to go. Easy install and the app walks you through every step of the install.
It does what I wanted it to do
I was looking for a lock that would open as I approached it. Usually my hands are full and didn't want to fumble for keys, or punch in a code. It uses Bluetooth on my phone and does exactly that!
I also liked that if doesn't change the outside of the deadbolt. You can still use your key like normal and there's no electronic keypad.
One important thing I didn't realized when I bought it. It will lock automatically, but only based on a timer, not on your location (home or away). Using Doorsense, it knows when the door has been opened and closed. Once closed it will automatically lock immediately or up to 30 minutes later. If you go to walk your dog or take out the trash, bring your phone or key as you could get locked out!
To use the app on your phone to open it, you have to be within Bluetooth range or buy the optional WiFi bridge to do it from anywhere remotely.
Also, be aware that for this (or any automatic lock like it) to work, your deadbolt must slide in and out of the doorplate effortlessly without binding. The motor that operates the locking mechanism is not powerful enough to force it to lock or unlock. Make sure your lock operates this way or be prepared to make the adjustment yourself or hire a professional.
Simplified Company Arrival
I've been using mine for about a month now, and it's been perfect for my set up. I have a condo that all of the living space is on the second floor and I have a very small entry that leads straight up the stairs. I don't have to worry about opening the door for company coming over with a rambunctious dog, me and them crammed into the small space. I can unlock the door when I see them in my ring doorbell from upstairs, and not overly crowd the entry this way and have the dog zipping out the door, or in the way trying to take off shoes!
