Having to be on a restricted diet makes finding substitutes for fatty items a real chore. So I got this product thinking it'll be like a butter powder you see on the grocery shelves. Nope! This is REAL butter powder, and not only does it taste and smell like it ... it doesn't have the fat, either. So now can add a couple of teaspoons of this powder on potatoes, corn and mix it into jellies to give it that real butter taste and aroma. Bought a small bottle of cooking oil thinking it was needed, but haven't opened it yet. The ease of adding it as a powder on anything you heat up -- and without oodles of salt to cover up the flavor -- this butter powder tastes 10x better than any butter popcorn, too. Absolutely delicious. This, and the dehydrated onions, has turned "emergency" food into some of the best tasting diet food I've ever encountered -- without compromising taste and flavor.

    Damaged #10 food cans

I purchased four #10 cans of Food powders and butter powder was one of them. ALL four cans were badly dented. They were dented either at the top edge or bottom edge where the seal is, so there is a higher risk of that seal breaking long before the shelf life expires. These cans were damage BEFORE placing them in the box for shipping, no doubt. When I called Augason Farms to let them know, they were not interested in my problem, and I was not allowed to speak to anyone higher in authority than the receptionist. The box was in good condition and there is no way that they hit each other during shipment and got dented this way, as the receptionist was quick to suggest had happened. Interestingly, she did say that they have a section of damage cans, and it appears that they pull from this damaged section for Walmart customers instead of shipping the damaged goods to their own direct customers.

It has a texture like flour, not like buttery salty topping over popcorn. I recommend using a can opener to remove the entire top. The product doesn't pour well even though it wasn't clumped. I used a pointy can opener to punch holes in the can, but that wasn't effective. I used it a few times to try it over popcorn and in oatmeal and potatoes. I couldn't hardly tell it was on the popcorn. It mixes well with oatmeal or instant potatoes and helps make such foods more tasty. It would certainly be good in baking. I plan to keep some for sprinkling over spaghetti. In an emergency calories are a good thing. I like that it's vacuum sealed in nitrogen to help it last for a long time. It says it has a shelf life of 20 years and it should be good as long as it's sealed and kept dry and cool so the can doesn't rust.

I started out shopping for a case of Butter Buds. Then I read the ingredients on the Butter Buds that I had. UGH. I chose the REAL dehydrated butter instead. I am fully aware (as should other buyers be) that this will not turn into "normal" butter when reconstituted. I am on a diet and intend to sprinkle the powder over vegetables/rice/potatoes/pasta etc. as I have done with Butter Buds. Or, mix with some hot water if I need more to drizzle over something. No frying your morning eggs with it! (But you can sprinkle some over your morning eggs to give them some buttery flavor.) Butter Buds (or Molly McButter, etc.) is made primarily with corn sugar (maltodextrin). There will be lots of sprinkling in this gallon can!

I got tired of paying $4 a pound for butter to cook with, so decided to give this a try. It comes in an aluminum can with a reusable plastic lid which I store in the fridge. It is real cream butter powder you mix with an equal part of boiling water to make a butter paste to spread on toast, etc., and keep handy in a jar in the fridge. I find no problem with this product. If you have ever bought Butter Buds with all it's additives, well this is far superior. It is cheaper to purchase through Walmart than to buy direct from Augasonfarms. I would also like to try the strawberries and mixed bell peppers. I hope Walmart will supply them.

how much in lbs is this = to of fresh butter
    by dgstauffer 11/10/2012

    • A. Calorie-wise, this can is equivalent to about 2lbs fresh butter. Everyone who answered before made the assumption that a serving size was 1 tablespoon, but 1 tablespoon of fresh butter is about 100 calories, and the serving size on the can is listed as having 35 calories, which is the same as a teaspoon of fresh butter. One stick of butter=8tbsp=24tsp; 204÷24=8.5 sticks or 2lbs +2oz butter. The whole can is 2lb 4oz, but has powdered milk added, which may account for the weight difference. Once reconstituted, this butter may have a different volume than fresh, or you may be able to stretch it by adding other ingredients, but per calorie this is at least twice the cost of fresh butter. Which may well be worth it in food storage plans but not necessarily for saving money in your regular grocery budget!

    • A. I hope the math in that 9 sticks of butter answer is inaccurate. The label says 204 servings. Each serving should be equal to 1 tablespoon. 204 tablespoons of butter is 25.5 sticks of butter. There are 8 tablespoons in each stick... (204/8=25.5). Don't forget that each serving has to be mixed with liquid to yield each specific amount.

    • A. I used about 1/2 cup of powder mixed with canola oil to produce about 8 ounces of spread to be refrigerated. So to make 1 lb of butter, 1 cup of powder blended (manually) into about 1 cup, maybe a little less, of oil.

    • A. Using in place of butter: 1/2 cup butter powder plus 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of water is equivalent to 1/2 cup (1 stick) store-bought butter (http://www.augasonfarms.com/image/pdf/90363_Butter%20Powder_NUT.pdf) 36oz (size of butter powder container) = 4.5 cups 1 stick of butter = .5 cups .5 cups / 4.5 cups = 9 sticks of butter

    • A. Yes. Contents: Butter (cream, water , salt), non fat milk, tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate. Tocopherols and tocotrienols (Vitamin E) are fat-soluble antioxidants used as an natural preservative. Ascorbyl Palmitate is composed of of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) and Palmitic Acid (a natural fatty acid.). It is used as a fat-soluble antioxidant to increase the shelf life of vegetable oils and potato chips. This may also work with powdered milk fat.
