A staple in my house
I use this to add a boost to regular laundry detergent but I also make homemade laundry powder using Zote (and Fels Naptha), washing soda (and borax). It softens water which helps soap etc. clean laundry.

keeps away smells and is natural

I just love this washing soda! I read somewhere that it could help with smells in your washer so I decided to try it, it is not expensive. Baking soda is so natural also and I know it will not bother anyone's skin. I use 1/4 cup right in the tub, in every load now and my clothes have no smell at all and my washer does not smell. I have a front loader and if you have one you know they are awful for getting a mildewy smell. I tried to keep the washer door open but it always seemed to get pushed shut. I think it helps the clothes get cleaner also. I just can't be without it now.

Pair this with hydrogen peroxide

I soak my whites in a bucket with this and hydrogen peroxide overnight. I then take that bucket and dump the soda/peroxide mixture with the laundry detergent into the washing machine and that soapy mix really boosts my laundry detergent.

Great in home-made laundry detergent

I recently started making my own laundry detergent (after seeing how simple and cost effective it is on Pinterest). One of the 3 ingredients for the detergent is Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. I looked everywhere and finally found it at Walmart for a 1/3 of the price as Amazon!

Homemade laundry soap

I use Super Washing Soda to make liquid laundry soap. In large pot of water, I mix: 1 bar of Fels Naptha soap or Zote soap grated. Whisk till dissolved. Then add: 1 cup Super Washing Soda. Whisk till dissolved. 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax. Whisk again. Pour mixture into 5 gallon bucket with three gallons of hot water. Mix well and fill 2 liter bottles with mix. I pour one bottle into large (120 load) laundry soap jug and then fill it 3/4 full of hot water. Shake. Use 1/2 cup per load. Water can be added to jug if too thick.

4. There are a LOT of recipies online! I use this one: http://www.howdoesshe.com/cheaper-and-better-diy-laundry-detergent/ It makes a TON! Of course, I have 4 kids and a mechanic husband, so I do not think it is going to last the year that they say- but even six months is better than what I have been doing! One thing I would say- DO NOT microwave the zote- USE THE CHEESE GRATER! works much better! and not all the mess!
by BjDemetriades
5. Here's a link to laundry detergent, this is a liquid version and it works great! http://www.diyhomeworld.com/laundry-detergent/ This is the link to the dishwasher tablets: http://fromourheartstoyourhome.com/myblog/diy-dishwasher-tablets/

6. Yes, I had been doing my own powder laundry detergent for a year and I love it, because I am saving money and helping the environment. The recipe I used is: 2 cups of grained Zote bar soap, 1 cup super washing soda and 1 cup of borax. After mixing this together, I only use two tablespoon for each load of laundry. I buy the Zote bar soap and cut it like a in little squares and then put in my food processor, this will make it in little tiny balls, then I will mix it with the other two ingredients.

7. Laundry Powder 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup borax, 1 cup oxy clean (or any generic brand is fine too), and one fully grated bar of Fels Naptha. (grate by hand or in a food processor). Mix powders and put in to a wide mouth mason jar. (this should all fit into one single jar). Add 1 Tablespoon of the powder per load. Works with all washing machines. I've had both an HE and a standard. I have tried liquid recipes and gel recipes but they take a lot of time and create a lot of mess. This one works for me because it takes me under 10 minutes to make a new batch of laundry detergent and it seems to work just as well as the liquid. (formerly I would never have used a powder, even a store bought one, but now I am a convert).

1. Heck yabeen using it in my machine for over a year now with my homemade detergent.
by Condor1955
2. Yes, I use this as part of my recipe for my homemade laundry soap. I have an HE front load washer and it works great
by Cheryl
3. Yes, Louise - it is. I used about 1/2 Cup in mine and there were no problems with suds or overflow. I love how it works for all of my clothes!!
by Jamie
4. Yes. Just add it in with your regular detergent. Even if you have hard water, it's best to mix in with detergent before you put your clothes in. It works great and cleans well.
by JustMissAsh
5. I can't speak for "he" washing machines, but it's perfectly safe in "she" machines. Just kidding! We all make typos. Yes, it's quite safe in all kinds of machines.
by Nick
6. I use it in my HE washer. I made a homemade laundry paste (from Pinterest) which is made of this washing soda and it does not make too many (or any) bubbles. I occasionally use this as a booster for dirty kid clothes too.

1. No, you don't need it, the clothes feels normal. You will use softener or drying sheets only if you want to leave your clothes with a fragrance. Because the super washing soda helps eliminate any odor from the clothes when it is washing.
by Oldfashionlady
2. Fabric softner or sheets help, would use. I do.
by Condor1955
3. No, I do not use dryer sheets after using this.
by fraufonelady
4. I still use my fabric softener as usual when I use this product in my laundry
by Hallmama85
5. I do; more for the smell and softness of our clothes/linens. I also use fabric softener and dryer sheets even if I'm using Tide, however. So I think it's personal preference.
by nomorenamesleft
6. I don't use fabric softener anymore because it makes fabrics non-absorbent. I always wondered why all my rags seemed to repel water instead of soaking it up. Now, I use about 1/4 cup of BAKING SODA in my rinse and my clothes and towels come out soft and fluffy...and my rags and towels absorb water instead of repelling it. Also, the baking soda is much cheaper than fabric softener.
