  • A. I got the adapter, small cable from adapter to USB, power supply that steps down the voltage needed. The power supply works with the old 3 prong power supplies and the new ones that do not have the 3 prong plug. It has a CD but not necessary with simple HDD hook ups and a small instruction sheet. I never used the CD. Good Luck

  • A. I thought about this. After I cleaned the HDD I had recovered, I realized I can leave it attached to the computer and use it as an external drive. Even if it isn't attached all the time, I can attach it anytime and use the old HDD as an external drive. And, with two drives I recovered data from, I can change the HDD's and have two external drives. IT's a good idea because after you use the adapter, you really may not need it again. So, this is a way to make it useful. It would work for sure... Good Luck

  • A. Yes - Adapter will allow you to use any hdd as an external hard drive. The only caveat is that their is not cover or case for the drive.

  • A. It can be done if you trust the reliability of your old hard drive, it just won't look pretty. The connection is not super fast, but it will get the job done.

  • A. Yes, just be careful of making sure that the adapter stays in good contact with the drive. In this case, some duct tape might be the magic glue to keep it all ship-shape.

  • A. As long you don't drop, spill,or anything with your hard drive it be fine. The adapter is good, but you can't watch movies, transfer, and everything at once. You might noticed a movie will freeze a second if you multi task with your hard drive hooked up with this adapter. Still a very good product and for the price

  • A. I think you COULD do this, but I don't think you want to if you are trying to use this extra hard drive on a daily basis. I view the Apricorn Adapter as a one-time transfer tool to move data from a hard drive to another hard drive. Either to recover files, or to back up files. I don't think it is designed to be used daily to run an operational "external" hard drive on a pc.

  • A. It can surely be used as an external H.D. as long as you have a USB port available. The H.D my get hot, but the adapter remains at room temperature all the time. I don't believe it will burn out due to usage.

My computer's motherboard burned up. Can I use this device to put the hard drive into and get out some files that I want to save by connecting it to the new computer?
by an anonymous customer 2/2/2010

  • A. Yes, I did exactly that when my motherboard caught fire and really did burn out. It worked great and attaching the HDD to the adapter is easy and so is recovering the lost files. Box comes with everything you need. Don't worry about that. Power supply, cables, adapter and instructions are all there. Out of the box, about 10 minutes to figure it out and retrieve data. It was that easy. Even a cave man can do it. Good Luck

  • A. Yes, this is exactly what this device is designed to do. In my case, my laptop hard drive crashed and Windows XP would not load. I removed the laptop hard drive, attached it to the Apricorn Adapter, then attached it to my desktop pc using the USB interface. The Apricorn Adapter has an AC power adapter to power everything. I used the Apricorn Adapter like a big USB flash drive with Windows Explorer. I just dragged the files I wanted from the bad laptop hard drive to my desktop pc under a folder I created. Then I got a new laptop hard drive preloaded with Windows XP, and installed it. Then I re-installed all my software applications. Finally, I transferred my personal files from my desktop pc to the new laptop hard drive using a USB flash drive. I probably could have saved some time and effort by just cloning the old laptop hard drive using the EZgig software that came with the Apricorn Adapter, but my Windows XP operating system had a lot of bugs in it because it came from a locked down office network so I wanted a clean install. So that is why I didn't want to clone it.

  • A. I had a hard drive failure and my data was recoverable with this device. The device was plugged into my 2.5" PATA laptop hard drive then connected to a different computer via a USB cable. My data was displayed in the Windows Explorer menu (just as if I had attached an flash drive) and from there it was transferred to an external hard drive. I see no reason why your files couldn't be saved on your new computer. I hope this helps.

I bought this product because I needed to recover data off my father's old 2.5in HDD. I could not get my PC at home to recognize the drive to save my life using a simple 2.5in to 3in adapter. But, I was able to get it to work with this one. Using a third party app, I was able to scan and recover all the important data. The product has also been a favorite tool for my fellow computer guy friends here at work. It has worked without fail on ever computer and hard drive we've hooked it up to. We expanded a drive on a server using it. A buddy migrated over to Windows 7 using it as did I. We've hooked it up to SATA, 2.5in, and 3.0 in Hard drives, and they all worked without a hitch. I also uploaded a pic of the cables it uses and som HDDs we've used it on.

I have been extremely pleased with my purchase of this Hard Drive Adapter because it has allowed me to retrieve data from several hard drives that have crashed when nothing else was working. With the adapter I was able to connect them to my laptop and run test on them along with data retrieval programs that I was not able t do with them in their respective computers. So far I have only run across one hard drive that would not connect to this adapter and that was one from an HP laptop computer although it is a SATA drive the connections are designed differently instead of the normal flat circuit board connections the HP drive (made by Hitachi) has a series of "U" shaped wire connectors, making it a non standard SATA hard drive, and will not connect to the adapter. Over all though I am extremely pleased with this adapter and will use it quite frequently for retrieving data from various hard drives that I have and to aid in fixing or repairing hard drives of friends, family and others when needed.

Works perfectly!! I have tested it on IDE drives and SATA drives on both USB 1 and USB 2 ports. IT WORKS!! Very eazy to use. Comes with drive cloning software. I have not tried that yet. I work in IT and I use this this at least once or twice a week for recovering data from crashed hard drives. I have tried other cheaper products like this. Too many cables and adapters and they didn't work on every type of drive.

Great Hard Drive Rescue Device

This was a great device for rescuing almost all of my personal files from a laptop hard drive that crashed preventing Windows XP from loading. I pulled my laptop hard drive and hooked it up to this adapter on my desktop. It was easy to do by just following the instructions. Immediately, I got access to the old laptop hard drive through Windows Explorer on my desktop. This adapter worked just like a big flash drive or memory stick. I simply created a folder on the desktop for my laptop hard drive files, then dragged my personal files from the bad laptop hard drive to my new desktop folder. I only had about 2 dozen files out of over 13,000 (5 GB) that did not transfer, and these were not critical. I did not use the EZGig Clone feature to clone my bad hard drive because I got a new hard drive preloaded with Windows XP. So all I had to do was reinstall my Microsoft Office Applications, and other applications, as well as my personal files from the desktop. I did that using a 16GB flash drive. So far, everything is working fine, so I am very happy with this device.

If you ever want or have the need to change your hard drive on your laptop (or desktop), this is the device for you. This will give you a cloned bootable drive from your old hard drive in a simple and quick way. It will handle any type or size drive and is great for backing up your data on any blank hard drive. This adapter is small and easy to store, and I recommend it to anyone. A great product.

I had been wanting to get an external drive adapter and my Granddaughters hard drive crash was the excuse I needed. The drive had a yrs worth of photos on it that she had not backed up. So she comes to Grandpa to try to bail her out. Anyway Windows would not recognize the drive in any situation. Using the adapter it would assign a drive letter but would report that it was unusable. But using a few google searches I came up with two free programs to help me out. They would do a low level scan of the whole drive and you could choose what type of files you were looking for. Have not finished clearing out the files that were not her photos but it seems that she will get most of her photos back. Her drive was a Sata drive and I have used this with a Pata drive that I had and will use as an external backup. This device worked great for me and I think a good value. It has a quality feel to it. It has my recommendation.

Restored my External hard drive

I have a Western Digital external hard drive, which stopped working due to power supply on the board was damaged. Like most people thought I lost 500 GBs of stuff gone. The power supply was damaged on my part. The cord was damaged. I hooked the cord wires wrong and plugged it in. If your Western Digital external hard drive sudden stop working and appears wd installs initio driver. You can't access your hard drive, but see initio driver on. Your light on your external drive will work too, but still no access to it. I suggest buy this. You have to take your hard drive out of the external case to plug this product in. This product is very easy to use and very easy to take a external hard drive out of it's case. This product easy to use. Saves money, time, and hassle. Recover data cost hundreds of dollars from the manufacture. This cost so much less and I still can use my hard drive too.

When hundreds of hours of accumulated information is lost in a nanosecond, a feeling of panic is soon followed by shear fear, all your information is gone...... forever or is it? The Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter becomes that hope that what is lost can be retrieved. Indeed, this adapter worked with my old HDD from 1998 and a slightly newer HDD from 2002, with zero issues. The Apricorn adaptor was a no-brainer to use (user-friendly, to be polite) and attaching the HDD and adapter to your computer, simple and easy. Within minutes of unpacking the Apricorn adapter the lost data appeared on my screen. I know what Apricorn claims about the Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter is true. Thank you..... it worked.

I bought this product to salvage the data from my hard drive on a Gateway Computer which crashed. I wasn't sure if the hard drive was destroyed or not as it wouldn't do anything. The fan would run and that was all. I connected the Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter as per instructions and it brought up everything that was on my old hard drive. It acted as though it was just another flash drive. All I had to do was begin transferring the data from the old hard drive to my new computer and I'm back in business without loosing anything. I will definetly recommend this product. It is well worth the money I paid for it.
