I purchased this for my Apple obsessed husband for Christmas and it definitely did not disappoint. We already owned the first generation AppleTV and used it daily. The commands and navigation were already simple and to the point but the new remote offers some really nice added features such as, a button that will take you directly back to the main menu vs hitting back several times. It also allows you to control the volume and turn your tv on eliminating the need for any other remote except when turning the tv off. The touch pad makes it so simple my three year old can navigate easily to her favorite shows. I recently ditched Cable and having Hulu, Netflix, HBO as well as my favorites like PBS, History channel, etc. all in one place is perfect and the new games and App Store is a nice addition. My one complaint is the simple fact that I cannot get an Amazon Video app for viewing shows from my Amazon prime account. I understand apple and Amazon are compositors in this area but it would be nice to have. All around still an amazing product!
this is an Apple product, so you know it's good.
just a couple of cons:
(1) the remote has a couple issues. the touchpad is too sensitive and takes you places you didn't intend to go. I prefer buttons to the touchpad. BUT the voice activated rewind and fast forward is da bomb! greatest thing ever on a remote. want to rewind 13 seconds? just ask. want to FF 14 minutes and 2 seconds? just ask. most remotes get you close, this function is exact.
(2) you cannot get the AMAZON app on Apple TV, they consider it a competitor to iTunes (!). so if you have cut the cable and want one device to stream ALL services, Apple TV will not do that. sad. I have to use my Blu-ray player to access the Amazon app, and that is much slower than the Apple device.
I also have a Roku 3 on another tv and you can get ALL the apps on that. it also has a voice search function, but not enabled for rewind and FF. too bad, get with it Roku :o)
I use the Amazon, Netflix and Hulu apps every day (but never iTunes), so I use the Roku as my #1 device. but the Apple TV device is still awesome, and I'm glad I have it.
well the apple TV streaming unit arrived I am not a novice setting up streaming devices etc.
.. well talk about frustrating.. trying to set the darn thing up is nothing but a mess.. NO INSTRUCTIONS what so ever .. and it has this weird remote that is re chargable but it doesn't indicate that it is Rechargeable ( suppose to GUESS I suppose ).. then trying to sign in good grief.. No wonder this isn't a TOP Ranked streaming unit.
. After trying to pair the remote w the device that took almost 30 minutes... got in signed in ( you have to use an APPLE ID to sign in ) .. after signing it.. a POP up message . you cannot sign into the device UNTIL YOU SIGN IN ON A PC or a MAC computer !! at that point I tossed the remote across the ROOM>>>>>>>>>>> Don't know if I broke it or not but had ENOUGH
........... I cannot recommend this device.. for it lack of instructions ( could not even find good info on line ).... by a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.. is my recommendation
Despite the fact that the display case at Walmart says optical digital and even comes bundled in some packages with a digital optical cable there is no digital optical port on the Apple TV4. Be sure you have HDMI on your amp or you will need to buy a new amp. Also could not pair my keyboard only to find out Apple 4 does not support a keyboard. You just have to hunt an peck with the remote. I recommend All TECH products come with a photo of the back panel so you can physically see what you are getting. As a user of the 2nd gen Apple TV, I though I knew what I was getting. Descriptions both on line and in the store promise digital optical. VUDU also does not yet have an app for this device and when you try to use airplay it send you an error because of licencing issues. Many Walmart customers are using VUDU to manage their digital collection. They are out of luck.
We had an older generation appletv that we liked but needed a second one for a second tv. We tried Roku but it is much slower and not as smooth transitions. Apple products are great and this is no exception.
BTW, if you want amazon or bravo just stream it on your iphone then shoot it to the appletv.
I love Apple TV but this new generation has one thing I actually have issues with and that's the new controller. It feel less substantial than the original. Don't get me wrong it does exactly what it is supposed to do but it just feels weird. The clicking action feel like it is barely connected, like you can pull it apart by accident.
Now for the good. The games integration and Siri make an already good Apple TV a better Apple TV. Music, tv, movies all run smooth, 1080p is perfect. 4K is not necessary at this time so it's a good deal. Most movies come with digital copies that are iTunes compatible.
I think the next generation will copy the Amazon echo and have Siri always on and it will really be the beginning of home integration.
I am not new to Apple products, but this is my first Apple TV. Straight of of the box it was an easy set up, it took me maybe 4 minuets and the worse part was tapping my email address in with the remote. The remote did feel a bit flimsy & awkward to use, now after a couple of weeks of using the remote it feels comfortable.
If you are familiar with using Apple apps, then this will be very easy for you to use.
There are more games being added all the time, though I personally didn't buy it for the games.
I know that there are other streaming devices out there, but I wanted a simple, easy to navigate one with extra features like Siri, and I got that plus more with this Apple TV.
I've had Apple Tv for the last 3 years and I own a Fire Stick and a Roku and several 'smart' Tv's and DVD players. The Apple TV has ALWAYS been better than all the rest of those devices. And the new 4th generation AppleTV is amazing. Speedy and I love the unified search. I wish I could afford to replace my other AppleTV, Firestick, and Roku with this device. I do wish I could get my Amazon Prime Video on my Apple TV easily. But I understand Apple and Amazon are in the same content provider business so that won't happen soon. Siri Search, Apps, and games make this a definite recommendation for anyone.
I will start by saying that I am a big fan of Apple products. That being said, I am a bit disappointed in the Apple TV. The overall quality was great but there are still some bugs to work out. For example, when I am in Netflix looking for shows the app will close for no reason and I have to reopen the app. Also, when scrolling sometimes the devices hangs for a moment or two, which never usually happens with Apple products. I think an OS update to fix the bugs would make this a 5 star product.
This is fantastic, it has great Apps that are ready to download and use. I also like that it can control my tv. My tv powers on and off with my apple tv. I am also able to adjust the volume of my tv from the apple tv remote. It is one less remote to use. I also like the air play ability and the fact that it can send the audio to any bluetooth speakers. Finally I really enjoy using siri, she understands me about 85% of the time. She saves enough time to make it worth using first and if it fails to just do it yourself. Overall an excellent improvement from my Apple TV 3. The price is still a little high for the features, but if you are already immersed in the apple ecosystem, its worth a buy.
