Man is this reel light. I've been an Abu fan since childhood and have owned many of their reels. Prepping for a Canadian fishing trip last year, I decided it was time for an equipment upgrade. I had been using the same old Abu Black Max and Ambassadeur 6500 C3 for nearly two decades. I was hesitant to get the MGX because of the price tag, but was not disappointed. I intended to use the MGX for smaller fish and primarily use a hefty round reel (Ambassadeur Record 5600) for northern, because I didn't think the MGX would handle a big fish very well; but after casting a few times, just could not bring myself to pick up the Record - it felt like a kettle-bell by comparison. And this reel casts a mile, 10-20 yards further than anything I have fished before. The MGX proved more than capable of landing good sized fish. It does have a lighter drag, so it may take an extra minute to pull in a big one, but the smooth drag coupled with the ease of grip compensates nicely. I landed both of these nice northern without any issue. I was so impressed with the quality of this reel, I bought another one to pair with a lighter rod to throw lighter lures. I highly recommend the MGX - it pairs perfectly with a Villain rod. Spend the money, it is well worth it.
