About This Item
Participating in the historic Battle of the Bulge, the 644th Bombardment Squadron lay waste to German warfare efforts. Precision bombing runs were often troop camps, railroad bridges, fuel supply depots, airfields, and ammunition dumps. Deploying in the Douglas A-20 Havoc bomber airframe, seasoned veterans strapped on their rubber oxygen masks, adjusted nearly every knob, dial, and switch on the instrument panel, then took flight toward their assigned objectives. Each man individually rehearsed their own personal battle compartment checklists, which might have even included a prayer or two.
Before, during, and after the Battle of the Bulge, the 644th crew flew mission after mission without fail. It wasn?t the victory cheers they sought, neither was it the standing ovations. Egos were wholeheartedly not the order of the day. It was the personal sense of accomplishment, knowing our way of life and lifestyle freedoms were at stake. These air troops fought without the pomp, without seeking rewards. They simply carried out what they were taught to do.
This knockout combat unit patch, belonging to the 644th Bombardment Squadron literally packs a punch. It has a unique point of view, in that the fist is flying toward the viewer, 3D style. It?s a clenched hand with golden wings, arched and swept back. The brass knuckles within the white-knuckled grip alludes to the most severe combat injuries, with no punches pulled and no quarter given to the foes whatsoever.
