It is 1993 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fourteen-year-old Jay has a close group of friends: Eric, Jun-Jun, and Alan. They have known each other since elementary and are entering their freshman year of high school. They are typical Filipino-American teenagers who play video games, enjoy the company of friends, and spend time with their family. Jay usually stays to his core of friends and doesn't like the constant teasing and comparisons that he endures from his family. The only place that makes sense is on the synthetic track surface of James Logan High School's stadium.
Summer is a transfer cheerful student from San Diego. Unhappy with the transient lifestyle of the military, she yearns to find a place where she can plant roots and have friendships that last more than three years and hopes to find that in her new school. Hidden under her smile is the social pressure of being the daughter of Filipino immigrants.
When Jay notices her beauty and bright personality, he is smitten. Afraid to speak to her, Vanessa, Summer's new friend, comes to the rescue bringing them together.
4 Years of Summer is a coming-of-age story that follows Jay and Summer throughout their high school years. It is full of nostalgia for those who grew up or those who admire nineties pop culture.
