These can be used "as advertised" for sun protection. They're also great when the water is turning cooler but not yet cold enough for a wetsuit. Later, they can be used under a wetsuit to make it easier to step in and out of the legs. Regular leggings don't stand up to salt and/or chlorine but having used this fabric before I believe these pants will stay snug in the water over a long period of time.
