This is the third Stir Crazy I have owned. The first, of similar design, was phenomenal. It rarely did not pop all of the kernels and operated for years. The dome top cracked and was repaired a number of times. Still working, my wife gave it away and bought a smaller Stir Crazy for me as a gift. It was surprisingly awful and ended up not popping more kernels than it popped. Despite it being fairly new, I gave up on it and purchased this Stir Crazy, similar to the first one I had owned. It is more powerful at 1000w versus 800w for the smaller popper and has a wider base so more kernels make contact with the heated base. The wire needed to be bent slightly to stir the kernels properly but that was simple to do. I don't use the top to add butter but take the lid off to allow excess steam to escape. I highly recommend this version and plan to return the smaller one to the manufacturer since it performed so poorly.

This is probably my 4th or 5th Stircrazy over the last 20+ years, so we get 4 or more years out of each one. The last one was still stirring but didn't heat up sufficiently to consistently pop anymore. The large bowl (cover) was also cracked but who isn't after that much use? We make popcorn at least 2-4 times/week. All 3 of my adult kids each have a Stircrazy in their homes and are very happy with them also. My daughter-in-law taught me that I CAN put the cover in my dishwasher since I do not use a heated dry cycle. It was a few days before my replacement Stircrazy arrived so I retrieved and used a Cuisinart stirring popper that was left over from a daughter's college days. It worked OK but the popcorn was not as good as that from Stircrazy. It was a bit soggy from no ventilation holes in the lid and the popcorn wasn't as fluffy. We were glad to see the new Stircrazy arrive! Try it with coconut oil - it doesn't taste like coconut but has a wonderfully different taste. Please keep making this product - we'll be back in a few years!

We've had Stir Crazy poppers for many years and like the way this style of popper works. Our only complaint is the quality of the manufacturing is decreasing with each new one we get.

This is number 4 for us now. The best we can get out of one is about 2 ½ years. This is about the same for any electric gadget that has a heating element that's used a lot. Coffee pots and so forth. We read reviews for this and other Corn Poppers and the Stir Crazy seems to hold up the best. We pop a lot of corn and this popper is easy to clean - just wipe the inside base off with a dry dish cloth and the top that serves as the bowl cleans up nicely in the dish water ( I don't think it would last long if you put the bowl top in a dishwasher). The popper pops most All the kernels if you put a little less than a cup of corn in it. The heating element WILL burn out faster if you leave the black cap on the top while popping however... ask me how I know. ooops But it's still the Best buy for your money.

Never Eat Microwave Popcorn Again

Our household is famous for its popcorn, and the Stir Crazy is the reason why. NOTHING makes popcorn like this popper. We've literally used three poppers to death. The plastic covers have never broken for us and they're fun to watch through. The motor lasts years for us and probably longer for you. You're in control of the amount of oil you use and popcorn you make. At our house, we like to flip it out of the top immediately so it doesn't get soggy from the steam. I have never bothered to use the butter holes on the top. I melt mine in the microwave. Butter and garlic salt and the Stir Crazy make unforgettable popcorn!

  • A. I use 3 tablespoons of oil and 3/4 cup of popcorn seeds. I found it to be the perfect amount. Anymore than 3/4 cup of popcorn seeds would be to much and would burn and not pop all the seeds.

  • A. Directions say 1 tablespoon oil to 1/3rd cup kernels. Don't need lots of oil because of the non stick coating of the base unit. I found a small scoop that is a bit larger then a tablespoon. So to keep it simple it's one scoop of oil not quite filled. Three heaping scoops of kernels.

  • A. This popper does not have an off/on switch. Plug it in to the electrical outlet after you load the popper with the correct amount of oil and popcorn. Unplug after it's finished popping immediately to avoid burning the finished popcorn and turn it upside down as the element is still hot. Pour melted butter (and salt) over it and enjoy a real treat.

  • A. You can use it without oil, but it will be very bland, and salt will not adhere to the corn (salt falls to the bottom of the bowl, without oil to stick to). I use just a little canola vegetable oil. I prefer it over the special buttery popcorn oil. ...haven't tried coconut oil, which is very good 'fer 'ya.

  • A. You can ... kinda. Basically speaking, it will pop some popcorn. However, the oil distributes the heat over the seeds. If you don't use oil, you can only pop a tiny amount. Some stuff won't pop at all and some stuff will burn. You might want to stick with an air popper (I recommend the Presto PopLite one). That uses air to distribute heat rather than oil. This means you can eat your popcorn plain and still have a decent sized load.

  • A. You have to use some oil with these types of poppers. I use refined coconut oil (LouAna brand from Walmart) which makes the popcorn taste just like it does in the theater. :) I am receiving a Stir Crazy popper as a Christmas present this year, but I've been using a Whirley Pop for about 3 years. If you don't wash the pan every time, but simply wipe it out, it becomes seasoned (similar to a cast iron pan) and less oil is needed. I only need 1 Tablespoon of oil when making 6 quarts of popcorn. I imagine the Stir Crazy will be the same, especially since it has a non-stick interior.
