Only a few garbanzo beans sprouted

i soaked, rinsed, drained per instructions and turned mason jar upside down on the screen lid I bought. After 4-5 days only the garbanzo beans sprouted, and they were tiny. I suspected they would start going bad, so I used them. Very disappointed.
