This is neither a CD that favors complexity for its own sake nor one that was recorded with bop's hardliners in mind. Melodic, easy-to-absorb instrumentals like "Large and in Charge," "One to Another," and "A Kiss" go for immediacy and will appeal to those who admire soul-jazz players like Grover Washington, Jr., Stanley Turrentine, and David Sanborn. But at the same time, Since You Asked favors the types of spontaneity and improvisatory freedom that make jazz what it is. Play Since You Asked next to 1996's overproduced, unspontaneous An Intimate Affair, and it's hard to miss the fact that this album is a lot meatier.
