    Perfect Portrait Camera

I bought this camera as a new addition to my Portrait Photography business. This takes much better pictures than my previous camera!!! I love this camera and use it constantly! The battery life is very good...about 600 shots before it dies. Pictures are clear and crisp. I would recommend to anyone. The only MAJOR flaw on this camera is with the video. Two things... make sure you have a modern computer, not anything older than 2 years or else it can't handle the viewing capability. I have to upload directly to youtube to see the video in good quality. Not lagging. And second...BIG thing here... when you auto focus with the video recording. it makes some pretty loud noise. I recommend shooting video in Manual focus mode.

    Worthy investment

We recently purchased the D3100 [and the 18-55 standard lens] along with a 55-300 lens, and a case that came with a Nikon school DVD. It replaced a Panasonic Lumix with 12x zoom for our trip to New Zealand. The DVD was very useful - it helped us take some outstanding photos especially with the powerful zoom lens at night. The standard lens allowed for some spectacular wide angle shots. The videos were also very easy to record even for our children using the Guide mode. The one star penalty was for the fact that for the perfect shot, you had to often change lenses unlike the Panasonic. On one occasion, in the process of doing so in rainy weather, one of the lens settings got accidentally pushed from auto to manual and ruined all shots. The camera didn't prompt any warning, nor compensated for the blur. I guess the SLRs are not as idiot-proof as the point and shoots and need to be carefully checked for settings every time - not always easy to do when you have a spontaneous opportunity.

    LOVE IT!

I originally purchased the sony nex3 from another store and after trying it for almost 2 weeks under different light conditions I was convinced I was not getting the quality I expected from a camera well over $400 so I returned it and did some research, fortunately the D3100 came to my attention after seeing some sample pictures and reviews. After trying it for over a week and have compared the pictures against the ones taken with my previous purchase and some others taken with my lumix point & shot I can really tell that the quality of the pictures I am getting is pretty good, I am not an experienced photographer, just a regular person who wants to keep memories on nice crisp pictures. I love the quality under low light or no light {which is hard to get} and with a decent amount of light the automatic focus does a great job, I would say that I love over 90% of the pictures I have taken which is a lot. I am still learning how to use the camera as it has lots of functions and options but I am quite happy with the purchase and the value for the money. It is not a cheap camera but it’s worth it. The automatic mode function does all the job perfectly fine. The battery life is just fine for my needs. Would recommend to any person wanting great pictures. The small lens that comes with the camera does not have a very powerful zoom but it is decent, so invest on the additional lens that is also offered by walmart, I wish I had done it as it was only $50 extra, did not think about it, next time...

    Nice camera, lots of features

I've used this for about a year , primarily to shoot my Son's high school hockey games. I'm using a Sigma 2.8 70-200mm EX primarily. I also have the Sigma 2.8 24-70 and a fixed focus 50mm 1.8 Nikon lens. The camera works very well with the lenses for indoor low light action shots. I generally use Aperture priority and set the aperture wide open. The speed (time to take a shot) of the camera is about the only issue I can think of, and in this price bracket it's certainly acceptable. The camera is comfortable to use, lightweight, and very durable. You can use it basically as a point and shoot or get as deep into the feature set as you like. Battery life if very good , I shoot about a 1000 pictures per game in a 2 hour time window. I do have a spare battery, but usually don't need it. I'd recommend the camera for any one new or anyone who has invested in Nikon lenses. I'd make sure though that the purchaser understands the importance of the correct lens. Great camer

    Amazing camera! must buy!

so i recently purchased this and already have 600 clicks on it and ive loved each photo.. upgrading from my D40 was easy as everything was in the same place and i love the extra steps nikon took to add to its white balance by adding specific colors as well. my main subjects are landscapes, family events, anything at Disneyland, cars and models. so far i love the camera. i recently took it to disneyland to see its night capabilities and it was great! even with the standard 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses it worked wonders! my 35mm 1.8 lens didnt do so bad either but with ISO set at 3200 and using the 55-200mm lens i was able to get the shots ive always wanted at night at disneyland. is great too, i shot at 720P 30fps the new years fireworks at disneyland and the colors are good, but the sound is lacking, like it doesnt have a "full" feeling.. nonetheless for quick video clips it does its job really well! bottom line.. it works great for me and i love it!

Great camera. Love it!! Everyone should have one.

I've had this camera for almost a year. I love it. Its definitely a beginner camera. I would use this camera when I would shoot sports at my school. I bought this camera myself, at being only 14. I have shot many photo shoots with it and it still produces great quality photos. I love the pictures it takes at night to. It really turns out awesome. I also went to a museum of butterfly's and took an awesome close up of one Everyone that has seen my Nikon D3100 has told me that they want to save up for one now to! I would definitely recommend to EVERYONE!!

    Amazing camera!

I'm a recent college graduate and I have been studying and exploring photography for the past year or so (so needless to say I'm very new at this). As a graduation present I received this camera from my parents. I LOVE IT. Now that I am done with school, I have some free time on my hands and now photography has become of a passion of mine BECAUSE of this camera. It is so easy to use (if you aren't used to DSLR camera, at first you might feel overwelmed, but give it time). It has amazing features & takes even more amazing photographs! I used to use a Nikon point & shoot then moved on to a Canon point & shoot. Nikon is the best of the best in my opinion & I could NOT be happier with this product. The D3100 is perfect for me because I wanted an upgrade from the standard point & shoot, but I'm definitely not experienced enough for a fancier camera. This camera is perfect for those who are just starting off in photography or just want to end up with AMAZING photos.

    I love this camera.

Okay I got this because I wanted a new camera (I had a Canon Powershot) This camera has EXCEEDED my expectations and I LOVE it. The pictures are clear, and the flash works AMAZINGLY.

    Amazing color and clarity!

I am new to DSLRs and so far I love my Nikon camera. The color and clarity are phenomenal and such a huge difference from a point and shoot (of course!). Being new to the SLR world, I have been using mostly automatic settings which work out well in most cases. Sometimes, though, the automatic setting doesn't really work for common situations and I end up with blurry photos of my 2 year old, or in some cases light that appears far too bright, etc. Because I'm new, I'm confident the camera can do better, I just haven't mastered it yet. However, I would like the automatic settings to be a little better at capturing day to day activities. Again--I'm NEW to SLRs and I KNOW this camera can do better and that I lack the experience; I just want to say that if you get an SLR, don't expect it to take perfect pictures if you don't know what you're doing---automatic settings are only guessing at what you need and a lot of times they aren't perfect.

3100 scores big, right out of the box

This is my 3rd Nikon SLR in 30 years, my second digital Nikon SLR (I have a D70). I bought it two weeks before a major vacation trip (plus the 55-200 mm lens), took a ride to the coast and shot the most amazing pictures "right out of the box". The 3100 continued to perform at high levels on our vacation, where I took great shots, ranging from New England landscapes to Times Square night scenes, to grandchildren on Halloween. I highly recommend it for its many features and compact size/light weight. I also ordered the Nikon SLR backpack, which worked beautifully for all my media on the trip. I kept the 3100 hanging around my neck, and was able to turn it on to capture precious fleeting memories. Now that I've tested it "on the run", I look forward to trying its more advanced features. One quibble: having to remove the viewfinder eyepiece and replace it with a cap in order to use the autotimer is inconvenient and definitely not a plus.
