My son is a football player and it is dark and they are moving and my current camera takes night and action, just not at the same time. So I am looking for a new camera; one that will take action/night pictures.

    • A. Of course you can. Just practice adjusting your white balance/aperture/and shutter speed to get a good quality photo at night, a higher ISO is ideal for dark conditions. The camera itself has settings for night portraits and sports, as well as many others. These topics are all addressed in your camera's user guide, but you can always Google the information if you don't want to take the time to read the guide.

    • A. So far that I have been able to tell yes. You are going to want to put this camera in guide mode and do your own settings for this. You can still leave the auto focus on, but yes you can take night and action shots at the same time. My black and white dog was running around outside at night and I got some good pictures of him.

    • A. The kit lens would not work well in low light. Nikon make f 1.2 lenses, but they are expensive.

    • A. Your question is impossible to answer definitvely without actually trying it out. You need light, or a better ability to gather light than your old point and shoot. This SLR will definitely function better, but "perfectly" is iffy. For fast moving action like football you usually need around 1/500th second for an exposure. That means you need a good bit of light. You can do three things: Get more light: flash Allow more light in: get a bigger aperture/ more expensive lens Increase the sensitivity to light: higher ISO You have control over two of these options. A higher ISO makes for a less sharp picture. A bigger aperture, say f/1.8 or f/1.4 on a prime will cost you extra (about $300) If you must have guaranteed good shots, then you should get a higher end Nikon with a $1000-$2000 lens. Which is what the pros use.

I absolutely love this camera! I have only had it for 1 month and am finding the manual controls very easy to access and use. I like to have control over my photos and I hardly use the AUTO features at all. Since I am of the generation that began with cameras that had only viewfinders to frame your subject, I don't miss the LIVE LCD screen, in fact, I prefer it. My outdoor photos are much better viewing thru the viewfinder. It's easier to see in bright light what you're shooting. The photos turn out great, colors are vibrant and accurate. I've attached the first sunset photo I shot with this camera yesterday. Also, the battery holds a charge for a very long time. I've shot over 200 photos in a day and still have ALL the bars showing on the battery strength indicator. Finally, the price is right! I've compared and shopped around and this is the best price by far. I recommend this to everyone from the casual photographer to the more experienced "professional" photographers. From the casual family photos to the more artistic - this camera does it!

I didn't buy this camera at Walmart. But I want to give this review because this is an amazing entry level DSLR camera. I just upgraded my point and shoot Nikon Coolpix S50 (discontinued) to this one. Definitly a change. The software that came with the camera I didnt even install. I was told to go with Adobe Photoshop Essentials 8 which goes for around 100.00. Definitly worth the extra money though especially if you decide to take pictures in RAW (not jpeg). I got this camera on a package deal that included the 18-55mm vibration reduction lens (automatically is in the box with the camera) and the 55-200mm vibration reduction lens. You want the Vibration Reduction because otherwise the natural shaking of all hands causes blurred photos. I like the guide option the best. I put it into advanced mode and while going through the options it tells you what it does AND shows you a sample picture of what you might use the feature for. Absolutly would recommend this camera to anyone. Takes great pictures! Make sure you get the UV lens cover and Polorized lense cover for the lenses. Also make sure you get a nice bag. I got the Nikon bag that holds 1 camera body and 4 lenses or 2 camera bodies and 2 lenses. The sunrise picture was taken with the Nikkor 55mm-200mm VR telephoto lens. The flower (Lantana) was taken with the Nikkor 18mm-55mm VR lens. As you can see if you practice and mess with the settings you get AMAZING pictures!

What a fabulous camera! My first digital SLR. I went to the Nikon website to watch the instructional video for this camera while I was waiting for it to arrive in the mail. When it got here I charged the battery (took about 1 1/2 hours), went outside and took pics in auto mode which was as easy as point and shoot and they came out AMAZING. I can't wait to see what I can do with it in manual. So happy!!!!

This is a very nice upgrade from point and shoot. I tried the much more expensive Canon Rebels but they were a lot harder to use. This Nikon has a "Guide" mode to let you learn how to take better pictures (something none of the Rebels have). I recommend getting a second lens such as the 55-200 with VR for those less experienced with DSLR. The only thing that would make it better would be a video feature. I took the two pictures attached from about 20 ft away in a dimly lit room, great quality!

This camera is so easy to use. It has all the features you would expect in a much more expensive camera. I am amazed at the results every time I get behind the viewfinder!
