  • A. The manufacturer of course strongly recommends using Crayola Brand crayons for their product. I can only assume that some manufacturers have different ways of making their crayons that may affect the melting point of the wax. The instructions do say that if the crayons have not completely melted, turn the knob back to relight the bulb for additional melting time. I cannot see any harm in trying other crayons.

  • A. You can use any crayon you would like to. You just have to break them up into pieces if they are bigger.

  • A. We used several types of crayons. Even ones that were slightly thicker than crayola. They just took longer to melt

  • A. The directions say only Crayola, we have used other brands, they melt either faster or slower, and the colors seem to mix together more than Crayola crayons do. The new crayons are nicer when made with Crayola.

This was one of those gifts that i took a chance on, having purchased many kids crafts in the past that were a disappointment. Not only was this product easy to use, but it was neat and contained (no leaking like the other reviews have said). The crayons it made were great and it kept my kids entertained for quite a while. They loved that they could keep changing the combinations of colors for the crayons. The machine itself is very well made and well designed. A winner in my book!

This is a great product and my family has had so much fun with it. I plan to use it with my school class as well. The only down side I have right now is we want more fun shaped molds.

My daughter and I love to do all kinds of art projects. When we take out our arts and crafts box, we set up the crayon maker. Make sure to read the instructions carefully, the mold has crayola printed on it and needs to face out. Also the melting tray needs to be put in a certain way too. It does take some time but we do all kinds of art projects while we wait. Clean up is not to bad as long as you follow what the instruction says. There may be some residue but that is what makes the crayons unique. It is also a great educational toy too. I love the locking feature, no more hot wax around my daughter and/or me.

Disappointed Children

My daughter has wanted one of these since we saw them a couple years ago. Now that we were actually able to find one i was so excited and so was she when she opened it on Christmas. I was disappointed to find that you need to buy the light bulb - it does say on the box (in very small letters) that it's not included. We opened it and read the instructions which said type B clear 60W bulb with small base. I had some like this that we use in our celing fan so i thought we were good - the base on the ones we had was too small. So on the next shopping trip i picked up the only other size base taht said type B, got it home and those have a base that is too big. So now i'm not sure what to do. We may have to take it back if we can't find a bulb that fits. It would have been much better if they would have included one bulb so we would have something to compare to when we go to buy a replacement. I was also disappointed to find out that it only makes half size crayons. Overall this is a great concept but poorly executed - surprising from Crayola

My son got this for christmas and it turned out to be his favorite gift! Walmart has the best price and i got it for less than it's advertised now which is a great deal. It does require a 60 watt small candelabra bulb (long tapered kind) and it shows that on the outside of the box so you don't have to make another trip back to the store for a special bulb. You have to make sure the molds are tightly squeezed together or you might get a small leak of wax , but it's easy to clean if that happens. I also love how this teaches kids to recycle their old broken up crayons. Very Fun for the kids!

Not impressed

I bought this product to use with my 5yr. old daughter. It is very messy. The melted crayons leaked from the bottom of the mold and poured behing the mold (and yes I had everything placed corrctly). It was very difficult to clean. I guess if you don't care about each previous color combination mixing with the current one then it's probably not a big deal. It does have a great safety lock so that the lid cannot be lifted while it's melting. My daughter said she thought it is boring and takes too long. It took about 30 min to make each set. One of the sets did not set up and melted crayon went everywhere after the mold was taken apart. It's a great idea and I am impressed with the safety lock, but overall wouldn't use it if one was given to me!!

this product made crayons and the paper looked cool after you colored on it with a rainbow crayon. my complaint is that i saved tons of scrap crayon pieces to melt and make nice new crayons with and this thing only makes half size crayons and you have to attach two pieces to a plastic holder to make a full sized crayon. why would i want to get rid of broken pieces to create half sized pieces?! i want a full size crayon!

I'd had promised my 7 year old Great Niece the Craoloa Crayonmaker since Christmas but everyone was out of stock. I finally found it on the WalMart website and had it shipped directly to her in Florida - I live in California. As soon as she received it I got a phone call from her thanking me and telling me how much fun the entire family was already having with it. Thank you WalMart for making my day.

I got this for my 8 year old niece and she LOVES it. She is making new crayons all of the time. She does not like it when her crayon tips break, so she gets to make new ones when they do. She spends HOURS making new crayons at home. It does have a small odor, but it is a fun toy.
