Detective Alex Cross tells the story of an ancestor, Abraham Cross, and his experiences with lawyer Ben Corbett, recounting one man's pursuit of justice in the face of the resurgence of Ku Klux Klan racism and violence in 1906 Eudora, Mississippi.

Separated by time
From his grandmother, Alex Cross has heard the story of his great uncle Abraham and his struggles for survival in the era of the Ku Klux Klan. Now, Alex passes the family tale along to his own children in a novel he's written--a novel called "Trial."
Connected by blood
As a lawyer in turn-of-the-century Washington D.C., Ben Corbett represents the toughest cases. Fighting against oppression and racism, he risks his family and his life in the process. When President Roosevelt asks Ben to return to his home town to investigate rumors of the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan there, he cannot refuse.
United by bravery
When he arrives in Eudora, Mississippi, Ben meets the wise Abraham Cross and his beautiful granddaughter, Moody. Ben enlists their help, and the two Crosses introduce him to the hidden side of the idyllic Southern town. Lynchings have become commonplace and residents of the town's black quarter live in constant fear. Ben aims to break the reign of terror--but the truth of who is really behind it could break his heart. Written in the fearless voice of Detective Alex Cross, "Alex Cross's "Trial is a gripping story of murder, love, and, above all, bravery.

New first edition book at a great price. If I had any complaint, it's that the shipping package is hard to get open, but absolutely necessary for preventing damage to merchandise during shipment. Timely receipt after published, well within estimated timeframes set forth upon purchase. A very satisfying purchase experience on-line.

New subject matter for Patterson, but it captivates you. Read it in 3 days & will now go back and read again, slower. Without Walmart pricing, I wouldn't be able to enjoy this book.

I read the alex cross's series and I'm going to put the I, Alex Cross on pre-order. But I want to know if this Alex Cross book is also apart of the series?

  • A. It involves Alex Cross, but not as the main character. It takes place in his ancestor's timeperiod. But standard Patterson---characters that you can understand & relate to & unexpected adventures.

  • A. Technically no. While one of the main characters is the grandfather or great grandfather of the Alex Cross series hero...the story and plot of the book are completely different and do not follow any other series patterns.

  • A. This book is not actually a follow-on in the Cross series, but is based on oral passed down Cross family history as the subject of a book that Alex Cross wanted to write. It is centered around relatives of Alex Cross living in the early 1900's who assisted President Roosevelt and his emissary in a mission to determine the truth of the horrifying plight of black people at that particular time in the south. Some of the scenarios are disturbing as lynchings and murders are recounted in stark detail and/or experienced by individuals in the story. Overall, I would recommend this book as an interesting and enlightening read.
