Basic skin care routine

Whether you struggle with your skin or are blessed with a flawless complexion, you should follow the same basic skin care steps every day.

Washing your face is most important at night, after a day’s worth of dirt, sweat and makeup have built up. No matter what skin type you have, choose a gentle cleanser—the idea is to remove impurities, not strip your skin. Pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel. Wash your face in the morning if needed. Listen to your skin—it’ll let you know.

Don’t skip this often-overlooked skin care step! Not only does toner remove any remaining impurities, it also helps rebalance the pH of your skin, which can change when you cleanse it. Restoring the normal 4.5 to 5.5 pH range can help skin protect itself from environmental elements and improve absorption of moisturizers and treatment products. With a cotton ball, use upward strokes to gently sweep toner over your face—no need to pat it dry.

Moisturizing morning and night creates a protective barrier between your skin and outside elements like dirt and germs. If you live in a climate with seasonal weather changes, you might want to choose a slightly richer formulation for winter and a lighter one for summer. Using clean hands, dot moisturizer on your face, then use upward strokes to gently massage it into your skin. In the evening, apply a moisturizer without SPF. For eyes, choose a product specially formulated for the delicate skin around the eyes and gently pat—don’t rub—the cream into your skin.

Even in the winter and on cloudy days, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. Speed up and simplify your skin care routine by choosing an SPF 15 moisturizer that combines hydration and sun protection in one step. Bump it up to SPF 30 in the summer. Apply—and reapply—a separate sunscreen if you will be in the sun for a long time.
