If you’ve ever watched HGTV or read a home decorating magazine, you’ve definitely heard of mid-century modern design. It’s endlessly popular, remarkably simple, classic and optimistic. But what does that all really mean? Those adjectives aren’t going to help you recreate this iconic style in your own home. So, although you’ve probably heard celebrity designers talk about how much they love this look—and may have even seen some examples of it on T.V.—it’s difficult to pinpoint just what defines the mid-century modern look. What is so appealing about its aesthetic? Why was it created? What makes it work for a modern lifestyle? We’ve found that learning a bit about the history of a style, the designers who started it all and what makes it stand out in today’s design world really helps us to get a better grasp of the aesthetic as a whole.
